This role is part of Data Labs that is a fast pace agile advanced data analytics environment for identifying value in data and experimenting towards development of industrial strength data pipelines and solutions. Data Labs Technical Architect will design, setup, build and maintain the data lab environment as well as experiment with various advanced analytics tools and techniques. The technical architect would also act as an owner of projects overseeing design to completion of the experiments.

Job Scope: Technical Architect is a hands-on developer and lab architect who will set up the data analysis stack in AWS, Azure or GCP environment and maintain its design and architecture on an ongoing basis. The primary objective is to have labs’ cloud computing environment available (a) with the ability to provision segmented computing and storage environments for various teams and projects and (b) setup new environments for end-to-end integration of various tools, packages and platforms (c) experiment or enable experimentation in advanced analytics. Keeping up-to-date with the most recent practices for running a computing environment inside Corning and in the industry, is an inherent learning trait for the position.

Responsibilities:

  • Environment design, setup and maintenance
    • Design and setup cloud computing environment in AWS (primarily), Azure, GCP or internal cloud
    • Write Bash scripts, develop/maintain AWS services using AWS console and AWS CLI
    • Write utilities, scripts to extract, stage and query data using various tools/frameworks
    • Use various .js frameworks
    • Configure machine learning, analytics and data migration services
    • Maintain and troubleshoot lab environment
  • Provision, configure and maintain servers, compute, storage, database, networking services for various analytics environments
  • Integrate systems in cloud, and non-cloud based environment in hybrid / non-hybrid mode using physical connectivity, APIs, web services, etc.
  • Experimentation
    • Evaluate tools and packages for deployment in the lab
    • Help data scientists, data engineers, architects and domain experts with experiments
  • Contribute towards building enterprise scale solutions for data analytics
    • Evangelize use of cloud and enable migration of existing solutions to cloud
    • Actively contribute to design and architecture discussions
  • Document design and solutions using git tools, office tools as well as native cloud services
  • Work with high-performing cross-functional experts across the organization

Skills Required:

  • Experience owning or maintain a lab environment in a physical and or cloud environment. Preferred – cloud environment
  • Experience working in agile/scrum mode
  • Experience with systems development, analysis, programming or testing.
  • Experience managing technical aspects of complex programs
  • Experience experimenting with and selecting tools, packages, frameworks and technology
  • Ability to conceptualize agile development and test environments with longer term enterprise level scalability and availability objectives
  • Experience designing and building labs to handle data at rest and data in motion
  • Experience with developing code using Java or .NET frameworks
  • Experience with designing and architecting multi-tier applications
  • Passionate about computing technologies and the possibilities
  • Excellent communication skills with customers and business partners

Education / Experience Required:

  • Bachelors in Computer Science or Engineering
  • 2+ years provisioning of or programming in cloud computing environments
  • 2+ years of experience as developer
  • 1+ years as configuration engineer, systems administrator, application administrator
  • 1+ years as networking engineer
  • 1+ years with big data stacks such as MapR, HortonWorks, Cloudera
  • 5+ years of overall experience
  • Industry certifications in cloud, systems and/or application administration or software development are a plus
  • Experience in manufacturing or material sciences industry is a plus
