Scope of Position

Participate in the design and development of electrical control systems to solve manufacturing challenges.  Focus on the design, commissioning and start-up of new equipment or modify and support existing equipment to meet challenging objectives in material handling, process control and data acquisition in global Corning manufacturing facilities.

Responsibilities

This entry level position will offer a highly motivated, technically curious, self-starter the opportunity to participate in a team to design, develop, build, program and commission new manufacturing systems across Corning’s 7 divisions and 77+ manufacturing locations worldwide.  Daily functions include:

 

  • Work in teams to design complete systems to control stability of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, mechanical motion, chemical management, robotics, power, and electromechanical systems
  • Actively participate in all phases of the project including design, fabrication, off-line integration and testing, installation, production start-up support, training of plant personnel and technology transfer
  • Independently follow construction of equipment in vendors’ facilities
  • Design and integrate PLC based process and automation controls into fast paced manufacturing environments
  • Develop capabilities in manufacturing controls for seamless part tracking and data analysis
  • Coordinate with project managers and fellow engineers to develop and implement control systems which facilitate state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities on a global scale
  • Work to enable productivity gains through innovative control software and hardware design implementations
  • Collect and interpret project needs from a variety of sources
  • Development of custom equipment drivers, function blocks, AOI’s etc. Enhance centralized software libraries
  • Test validity of solutions that use traditional and advanced controls
  • Provide associated documentation including requirements, design, budget, test plans and user guides
  • Individual must be capable of executing project assignments in a cross-functional team-based environment
  • Report on project activities on a pre-determined basis.  Ensure results meet the customer’s requirements as well as applicable national and international equipment safety design standards

 

Must be available for significant travel, primarily domestic, to multiple locations to support business needs. International travel could be required as well

Required Education

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics or related degree required
  • Well versed in basic electrical engineering principles
  • Familiar with one or more software technology: C#, JAVA, Python, Arduino, C++, etc.
  • Awareness of process controls techniques: Closed-Loop, PID, Model Based, Feed Forward, etc.
  • Motivation to participate in the design, development, and delivery of fully integrated control systems for automation and process controls in manufacturing
  • Understanding of electrical panel layouts, schematics, system testing and safe troubleshooting techniques
  • Ability to partner with external resources to design, develop, build, and deploy integrated manufacturing systems to global manufacturing facilities
  • Ability to perform and document safety risk assessments and then design systems in compliance with the latest safety standards
  • Experience with using scientific methods to execute and analyze experiments

Desired Experiences

  • Experience with IEC 61131-3 programming standards including ladder logic, function blocks (AOI’s), structured text or sequential flowchart desirable
  • Knowledge of machine vision concepts
  • Robotics familiarity (Fanuc, ABB, Epson, Motoman, etc)
  • Works well with other disciplines (process, mechanical engineering, project management)
  • Controls/Electrical Experience in Manufacturing
  • Basic project management skills (e.g. scoping, budgeting, timelines etc.)
  • Some knowledge of systems engineering, process support and debug
  • Ability to use effective requirement gathering techniques.
  • Familiarity with communication interfaces (Serial, Ethernet, general IP networking)
  • Basic knowledge of processes comprised of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer

The range for this position is $70,447.00 - $96,865.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
