Corning’s Environmental Technologies segment manufactures ceramic substrates and filter products for emissions control in mobile and stationary applications around the world.

 

Scope of Position:

Process Engineering role within the Diesel Manufacturing Firing Engineering Department involved with supporting capacity and cost reduction initiatives. The role requires interaction with Development, Engineering and Manufacturing personnel to deliver evolutionary improvements in processes or product attributes. Use scientific method to drive to fundamental understanding to solve manufacturing problems. Improve process understanding, product quality, process capability, and reduce manufacturing costs. Role includes individual contributor, technical leadership and project leadership responsibilities.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Support development and execution of firing technology strategy, roadmap and project portfolio
  • Work with manufacturing counterpart to troubleshoot equipment issues and implement solutions in a timely manner
  • Provide process engineering skills for process improvements for existing manufacturing products and processes, process development for new products, and root cause understanding for production issues
  • Work in a cross-functional environment: link between development, engineering, quality, commercial, and manufacturing to deliver the best possible solution
  • Use of rigorous tools to deliver results including problem analysis, potential problem analysis, risk assessment, DMAIC methodology, innovation
  • Experimental design to determine and optimize important process variability and product parameters
  • Use engineering/scientific principles and data to solve problems, including production issues while striving for fundamental understanding
  • Ensure best practices are communicated, evaluated, and implemented
  • Promote and develop technical growth and responsibility among department technicians
  • Integrate problem solutions into production and validate results. Provide second level production support.
  • Translate work, solutions, and directions into presentation to leadership that can be understood and are actionable

 

Travel Requirements:

  • Anticipate all work being in the Corning Valley. No travel anticipated;

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Generally 40 hrs. per week, but must be flexible. There will be times where off shift and weekend hours are required in order to support experimentation and implementation of projects.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum: BS in Ceramics, Materials, Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering with 0-3 years of experience in an engineering or manufacturing environment

 

Required Skills:

  • Technical competence in process engineering
  • Experience with measurement, characterization or ceramics processing technologies
  • Project leadership aptitude, including ability to achieve results through matrix organization or team
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at technical problem-solving and decision-making
  • Strong work ethic and desire to exceed expectations
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment
  • Communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to use data to drive to solutions
  • Strong drive to succeed and implement solutions
  • Technically curious, self-motivated

 

Desired Skills:

  • Strong ceramic processing knowledge
  • Strong raw materials understanding (selection, beneficiation, characterization, and impact on process characteristics)
  • Demonstrated results developing and delivering step change innovations to manufacturing
  • Skills and experience with statistical process control and Design of Experiments methods
  • Experience with application of 6-Sigma methods, KT and MEE
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in process improvement, measurement, characterization or ceramics processing.

The range for this position is $70,776.00 - $97,317.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
