Purpose of the Position:

Corning Inc. Information Technology (IT) Business Applications organization is partnered with the Global Operations Transformation (GOT) office to drive the company’s multi-year enterprise resource planning (ERP) transformation from 31 disparate and aging ERP systems across Corning to 3 instances of SAP S/4 HANA. The consolidation of Corning’s current ERP application environments onto a common platform will enable the delivery of enhanced functional capabilities, business efficiencies, increased agility, and a lower ERP cost structure for the company. The GOT team will ensure Corning has a business-led, enterprise-wide approach to the transformation, establishing appropriate standards for data and processes where needed, while supporting the migration of our businesses before, during, and after their implementations.


Key to this transformation and on-going operation of Corning’s common ERP is the management and coordination of technical elements required for effective and efficient maintenance of the entities operating on the common instance of SAP S/4 HANA.  In close collaboration with the GOT ERP Program Operations director, this role will coordinate and administer all technical aspects of the global ERP transformation program including planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling technical program activities.  Additionally, provide support to the GOT ERP Program Operations director as they prioritize the capabilities targeted for inclusion in the production environment.  Ultimately this role serves as a conduit between the GOT ERP Program Operations director and the IT and Emerging Technology stake holders as they coordinate down time for testing, upgrade, and maintenance activity in our ERP eco system.


The director will provide strategic and execution leadership to the ERP transformation program working closely with GOT office to bringing the appropriate thought leadership on methods, tools, and approaches required for successful delivery. The director ensures alignment between prioritized business objectives and IT strategy and develops the technology response / roadmaps in partnership with all stake holders including the business / functional areas and IT, as appropriate.

In addition, this position will provide tactical leadership to selected dependent enterprise projects.  The role will function in a matrix environment to promote best practices in managing inter-related projects to ensure successful delivery.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the GOT ERP Program Operations director that has extensive Corning knowledge and experience, you will be responsible for the following:
  • Co-Lead, with the GOT ERP Program Operations director, the ERP Transformation Program delivery, primarily providing technical program leadership
  • Build trust (collaboratively with GOT) with business & functional stakeholders, with empathy, great communication and negotiation skills
  • Contribute to the definition of and have a clear, high level understanding of the program and associated project goals and the status towards them. Ensuring the effective management and delivery of Corning’s ERP Transformation rollout strategy and master plan
  • Articulate progress, milestones achieved, risks & issues and financial management to any internal or external stakeholder, even if possible, help the team anticipate and prevent issues with adequate risk management and laser focus on goal-orientation
  • Ensure the development and execution of a comprehensive program change management and communication plan for the technical community
  • Collaboratively with IT leadership define and execute the technical program operating model for an enterprise wide, global, multiple business unit multi-year program with complex eco-system of Corning and vendor personas
  • Execute and provide governance for on-going S4 HANA Private maintenance and improvement projects.  Partner with the SC Service Line, Security COE and other Organizations on Retrofit projects for deployed locations
  • Support IT and GOT, as needed, to ensure SAP and external vendors are meeting Corning’s ERP system needs; participate in or drive, as needed, the escalation process for requests with SAP and other ERP delivery and support vendors
  • Contribute to developing and managing the goals of the program and key KPI's/OKR's to measure and monitor them
  • Provide guidance and leadership to the IT PMO as well as non-IT PMO project managers and work stream leads to ensure clear expectations on their roles and responsibilities and alignment to the program goals
  • Ultimately accountable for clear understanding of overall financials, including business funded deployments, for the program and meet expectations of corporate financial guidelines – Key partners include the IT PMO, IT Service Lines, IT Finance and GOT Finance
  • Provide guidance and leadership around resource planning against the prioritized portfolio of projects. Engage with the technical resource leaders, project teams and the business to understand project resource needs.  Provide comprehensive visibility into project status even for select interdependent projects
  • As appropriate:
    • Partner with GOT Program Director to leverage the Deployment Playbook to ensure effective delivery to the ERP Transformation Master Schedule
    • Provide leadership expertise on Agile product delivery working very closely with Agile coach and Scrum masters
    • Drive global blueprint application solution to new expansions in support of Corning wide standards
    • Work closely with project managers to ensure the program meets compliance expectations (SOX, legal, audit, etc.)
    • Partner closely with GOT (business & functional) leadership as well as IT’s Process Strategy and Adoption team to ensure appropriate training and change management activities are planned and executed


Education and Experience:

  • B.S. degree (in IT, engineering, or business), with related business discipline experience.
  • M.B.A. or other advanced degree in business or social sciences is a plus.
  • 15+ years working and leading complex IT operations
  • Experience in program management, facilitating process improvement workshops, and building consensus around a complex plan with many stakeholders


Required Skills:

  • Hands on experience in ERP and manufacturing technologies (i.e. SAP, Camstar, Camline, etc.) and cloud implementations
  • Strong presentation, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts in easy to understand business terms to all levels of management including senior leaders
  • Business process modeling and analysis tools and techniques
  • Building and maintaining a business process repository, using tools such as EA, BPMS or BP analysis tools
  • Experience with testing and security frameworks for large program deployments
  • Prior experience in LEAN techniques and latest journey mapping techniques
  • Not afraid to work in a new, uncertain, start-up environment – establishing new processes, systems, and organization
  • Ability to collaborate with partners to achieve objectives – particularly the Business Lead for ERP Operations or ERP Product Manager
  • Formal risk management experience
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple competing priorities with high attention to detail
  • Possesses strong analytical skills, good listening skills with ability to effectively coach and mentor others; must be able to lead by influence
  • Exhibits effective team skills

Travel Requirements:  Up to 25% travel to business teams and impacted sites as required for effective implementation which may include international travel


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Monday – Friday, standard business hours.   Some early or evening meetings may be needed when working across time zones.   Remote work acceptable
