Scope of Position:

Industrial Engineer (IE) intern will be assigned to an active project working for one or more of the experienced IE’s in the Corning Environmental Technology (CET) Department.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work in a cross-functional environment: link between development, quality, commercial, and manufacturing to deliver the best possible solution.
  • Use of rigorous tools to deliver results including problem analysis, potential problem analysis, risk assessment, DMAIC methodology, innovation.
  • Use engineer principles and data to solve problems, including production issues.
  • Prepares, executes, and supports experimentation and continuous improvement exercises.
  • Communicates ideas and project status clearly and professionally through graphic and written media, and oral presentations. Provides necessary documentation of activities, results, assignments.
  • Capacity modeling, process flow charting, 5S/Workplace Organization implementation, Value Stream Mapping, Value-add/Non-value add analysis, time studies, Human Factors and Ergonomic studies, and visual management technique implementation.


Travel Requirements:

  • None; travel only within Corning, NY area.


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, some off-hours support required.
  • Duration: Summer 2022, 8-12 weeks


Education Requirements:

  • Working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering
  • Currently enrolled and attending Sophomore year of college or higher


Required Skills:

  • Self-motivated, independent, flexible, quick learner
  • Excellent computer skills (working knowledge and application of Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, etc.)
  • Ability to multi-task and deliver results on given assignments by assigned due dates
  • Use of scientific method to solve challenging problems
  • Knowledge of materials processing
  • Working knowledge of basic statistics and process engineering principles
  • Communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to use data to drive to solutions
  • Strong drive to succeed and implement solutions


Desired skills:

  • Knowledge of (Lean) organizational design
  • Experience with Six Sigma DMAIC principles
  • Knowledge of basic engineering concepts and IE methods (process analysis, optimization, flow, etc.)
