DESCRIPTION
Performs assigned work, consistent with company posting and bidding practices and workload requirements, in any specialized machine shop field as machine tool work, bench and assembly work, machine shop inspection work, etc., but carries work through to completion as necessary.
As Machinist - Bench: Assembles, bench-finishes, and fits fabricated machine and mold parts to produce completed and operating machine, equipment, or mechanism. Makes adjustments to precision measuring instruments such as vernier, caliper, height and gear tooth gauges, micrometers, etc. by complete disassembly, repair, or replacement of parts and recalibration and adjustment involving use of master gauges. Makes tools, cutters and gauges according to blueprint specifications, as required by shaping, heat treating and grinding for proper clearance and fit.
As Machinist - Machine Tool: Selects appropriate speeds, feeds, coolants in accordance with nature of operation and type of metal uses; sets up machine tools by positioning, squaring up and attaching jigs, fixtures, chucks, vises, dividing heads, etc. to machine tables, spindles, or ways using indicators as necessary; grinds tools to obtain proper cutting angle, radii, etc.; sets cutting tools in holders, bars, arbors, etc., and mounts tool in machine; operates machine tools to turn, mill, grind, face, drill, bore, shape, etc. to required dimensions; measure work periodically, using vernier, micrometer, or spring calipers, height ring, plug or contour gauges, etc. to assure conformance to specifications stipulated by blueprint, or required by the nature of the next operation.
Plans and lays out work, and operates a wide variety of regular and specialized machine tools as required by approved Corning Machinist Apprentice Machinist Training Schedule, including a wide variety of such machine tools as: Milling machine, duplicating mills and lathes, vertical, turret and engine lathes, jib borers, shapers; planers, universal, external, internal, surface, blanchard, arter grinders, as well as other such equipment as pantographs, die sinkers, drill press, bench tools, welding equipment, heat treating equipment, as assigned.
As Machinist - Inspection: Inspect items as produced in machine shops either during the operations or after the item is completed. Uses micrometers, indicators, vernier, calipers, bead calipers, plug gauges, contour gauges, and other precision measuring instruments to check accurately all dimensions and surfaces of molds, plungers, dies, jigs, and other items produced in machine shops.
Diagnose faults, and supplies information needed to decide whether faculty item is salvageable, or is to be scrapped.
In connection with any of the foregoing, reads and interprets complicated B/P's and drawings to determine dimensions and tolerances, and makes auxiliary devices, as necessary, to carry out above work. As assignment, work load or other conditions require, performs work in a series of the above fields in order to carry work through to completion.
The starting pay for this position is $37.10 USD hourly rate. Compensation and benefits available for this position are dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
