Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Perform technician-level measurements and execute testing programs at the Center for Fiber-Optic Testing.
  • Independently collect, organize, analyze and graph data, publish reports, and maintain accurate records regarding products and testing systems.
  • Support new product development and enhancements to existing products by organizing and conducting qualification tests.
  • Support efforts to develop new measurement methods for evaluating fiber and associated systems.
  • Perform advanced level calibration, certification, maintenance, and troubleshooting of test equipment.
  • Provide, revise and maintain formal documentation of measurement procedures.
  • Develop and communicate schedules and manage timelines for assigned tasks.
  • Facilitate project completion in the laboratory.


Projects involved with:

  • Perform testing in support of new product and process development, qualification and characterization, competitive analysis, fundamental understanding, customer issues and requests, and manufacturing.
  • Conduct measurement method development.
  • Contribute to the development of experiments to evaluate fiber performance and fiber reliability in the application space.
  • Contribute to the development of improved measurement and experimental techniques for evaluating the performance of fiber and related systems. 


Education: A.A.S. in an Engineering or Technology field, B.S. in STEM


Required Skills:

  • Attention to fine detail and demonstrated in-depth technical understanding.
  • Strong data analysis skills with Excel or other software package.
  • Desire to conduct hands-on work in support of follow-up analysis and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a strong fundamental understating of a complex system.
  • Technical communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to assimilate new information and apply it to comparisons in future situations.
  • Technical problem solving experience, critical thinking, and data-based decision making skills.
  • Strong facility with math and physics.


Desired Skills:

  • Experience in technical leadership or training
  • Familiarity with optical and electronic instrumentation.
  • LabView and/or Visual Basic programming skills.
  • Relevant electrical engineering coursework – DSP, Signals and Systems, etc.
  • Experience with optical fiber handling

  • Time management and multitasking.


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday


Travel Requirements: Typically no travel.
