Purpose of this position:

To plan, support and lead workstreams on process and/or technology projects, including:

  • Develop or support new manufacturing technologies and methods
  • Develop and apply new and existing product attribute characterization methods
  • Improve existing manufacturing processes and capabilities
  • Develop methods and processes for the manufacture and characterization of new products
  • Develop methods, measurements and processes to improve existing products
  • Support manufacturing improvement initiatives, including variability reduction, defect reduction, process control improvement, 6-Sigma


Key Accountabilities:

To provide engineering expertise and leadership for equipment, process, methods and measurement technologies within the Environmental Technologies - Division Engineering Finishing Department. Lead technology and engineering project sub-teams.


Responsibilities include:

  • Plan, organize and execute major workstreams on projects to deliver improvement and step change capabilities
  • Project work scope typically includes design, development, manufacturing implementation, start-up and acceptance of finishing equipment and process
  • Role includes individual contributor and project workstream leadership responsibilities
  • Manage internal Corning and external vendor resources to complete project deliverables
  • Apply knowledge of engineering principles and methods to resolve challenges
  • Support development and execution of the Division Finishing technology strategy, roadmap and project portfolio
  • Support problem-solving in manufacturing, including root cause identification and resolution
  • Apply process engineering knowledge, skills and experience from concept through delivery of the axial skinning process and equipment at manufacturing locations.
  • Support individual or multiple plants within CET


Projects Involved with:

Developing new and improving existing manufacturing technologies, process, equipment, methods and measurements. Developing methods, processes and measurements for the manufacture of new products. Developing machines, methods, measurements and processes to improve precision, quality, cost and efficiency of product attributes. Support manufacturing improvements, variability reduction, defect reduction, process control, capacity and 6-Sigma.


Role Within Group:

  • Provide project workstream leadership, technical and process engineering skills to meet department goals and objectives
  • Member of Division Engineering Finishing Technology Department
  • Work with and facilitate alignment between manufacturing, development, engineering and process experts to deliver step change and improvement of process or equipment capabilities towards finishing technology


Travel Requirements:

  • Travel should be expected, dependent on project assignments. International travel is possible. Typical travel requirement is 25-45%.


Work Hours: 40+ hours per week


Education / Experience:

  • BS/MS in an engineering discipline (ceramic, mechanical, materials, or chemical preferred)
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in manufacturing, engineering or development
  • Leadership potential demonstrated on project teams responsible for implementation of new processes or equipment into manufacturing


Required Skills:

  • Technical competence in process engineering; including chemical, material science, ceramic, and mechanical engineering foundations.
  • Experience in successfully developing and delivering technical projects or process improvements into manufacturing.
  • Provide process engineering skills for scale-up of new processes and products and root cause understanding for scale-up production issues
  • Experimental design to determine main effects, as well as, interactions and optimize important processes and/or reduce variability
  • Effective communications: translate work, solutions, and directions into presentations to leadership that can be understood and are actionable
  • Experience with measurement, characterization or ceramics processing technologies.
  • Project leadership aptitude, including ability to achieve results through matrix organization or team.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at technical problem-solving and decision-making.


Desired Skill:

  • Strong ceramic processing knowledge
  • Strong raw materials understanding (selection, beneficiation, characterization, and impact on process characteristics)
  • Demonstrated results developing and delivering step change innovations to manufacturing
  • Skills and experience with statistical process control and Design of Experiments methods
  • Experience with application of KT, MEE, DMAIC and MIE methodologies, as well as, 6-Sigma methods
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in process improvement, measurement, characterization or ceramics processing.
