Corning’s Environmental Technologies segment manufactures ceramic substrates and filter products for emissions control in mobile and stationary applications around the world.


Scope of Position:

This position is part of Corning’s Environmental Technologies Division Engineering group located at the Erwin plant. This position supports the operation of a small-scale extrusion laboratory, called the Celpro Lab, which conducts raw material, rheology, forming, and die evaluations.


Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Execution of experiments within the Celpro Lab
    • Operate batching, extrusion, drying, and rheological lab equipment with a strong focus on adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
    • Make/record detailed observations while operating equipment
    • Save electronic files, enter data in Excel, data analysis
  • Equipment Leader within the Celpro Lab
    • Lead equipment troubleshooting and repair efforts
    • Work with outside vendors and/or Erwin Plant Maintenance to purchase replacement/spare parts, conduct routine calibration and preventative maintenance according to prescribed schedules, and repair equipment
    • Implement equipment modifications and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and/or Standard Operating Setpoints (SOSs) as necessary
    • Lead twin screw machine equipment rebuilds
    • Design, execute, analyze, and report Measurement System Analyses (MSAs)
  • Support lab maintenance of business such as safety, 5S, housekeeping checklists, SOS audits, preventative maintenance, document audits, LOTO adherence and audits
  • Projects and experimentation to improve lab results / efficiency or implement new capabilities


Travel Requirements: Up to 10% travel is possible.


Work Schedule: 8-hour day shift Monday-Friday. Occasional off-hours or overtime coverage required for experimental support.


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • AS or AAS in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics field
  • At least 2 years of process technician, lab, or manufacturing experience
  • Basic proficiency in MS Office including Excel, Word, and Power Point
  • Technically curious and self-motivated
  • Strong organization skills and attention to details
  • Able to manage multiple priorities
  • Experience with troubleshooting equipment and processes


Competencies Required:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability and desire to learn new techniques and computer programs (e.g. PeopleSoft, PI, Maximo)
  • Basic data analysis and graphing skills in MS Excel
  • Able to physically perform extrusions which require bending, occasional lifting up to 40 lbs. and standing for extended periods
  • Ability to be respirator certified for special material handling situations


Competencies Desired:

  • Previous job experience as those described above for Equipment Leader responsibilities
  • Ability to draw conclusions from data, summarize results in Power Point, and present results
  • Technical writing experience - documenting procedures and experiment plans / results
