Corning’s Environmental Technologies segment manufactures ceramic substrates and filter products for emissions control in mobile and stationary applications around the world.


Purpose of this position:

  • Lead/support new product and process development work-streams
  • Focus area is Finishing process and technology, primarily supporting Heavy Duty Diesel
  • Processes include plugging, skinning, machining, handling, and metrology
  • Transfers product and process to manufacturing per set criteria
  • Participates in development of technical & non technical solutions to problems associated with product, process and manufacturing system
  • Use the scientific method to drive to fundamental understanding, identified capability gaps and deliver step change improvements in process capability, product attributes/quality, and improved process understanding.


Responsibilities include:

  • Provide strong process engineering skills for new product and process development
  • Use rigorous tools to deliver results including situation appraisal, potential problem, and decision analyses, risk assessments, DMAIC, and/or Innovation methodologies.
  • Work in a cross-functional environment: link between development, quality, commercial, and manufacturing to deliver new HDD product capabilities.
  • Using experimental design to determine main effects as well as interactions and optimize important processes and/or reduce variability
  • Support problem-solving in manufacturing, including root cause identification and resolution
  • Demonstrate effective communications: translate work, solutions, and directions into presentations to leadership that can be understood and are actionable


Projects Involved with:

  • Scale up and integration of new products
  • Increase manufacturing quality, capacity and /or capability
  • Support defining & executing long term Finishing strategies


Travel Requirements:

  • Minimal


Travel Work Hours:

  • 40+ hours, Monday – Friday.
  • Typically 8-5, Support for off hours experiments and troubleshooting as required


Education / Experience:

  • BS/MS in an engineering discipline (ceramic, mechanical, materials, or chemical preferred)
  • 3+ years in manufacturing, engineering or development
  • 1+ year direct manufacturing interaction


Required Skills:

  • Technical competence in process engineering; including chemical, material science, and mechanical engineering foundations
  • Ability to develop new product & processes and ability to identify new technology needs, capability constraints
  • Ability to identify & clearly articulate problem statements and solution paths
  • Effective communication: translate data, solutions, and proposals into presentations to leadership that can be easily understood and are actionable
  • Works under general supervision - objectives are defined
  • Working knowledge of MS Excel, including formulas and graphing functions, JMP, use data to drive to solutions


Desired Skills:

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Proven track record and general knowledge of ceramic product and processes
  • Experience with new product introductions
  • Formal problem-solving leadership skills
  • Experience with Six Sigma DMAIC principles
  • Enthusiasm towards innovation and technology solutions
