Purpose of this position:

To plan, support and lead workstreams on automation and material handling aspects of technology projects, including:

  • Provide leadership and support in the Division using mechanical engineering and automation expertise to deliver robust, cost effective equipment, automation and machine systems to Corning’s manufacturing plants and processes.
  • Develop automation equipment and integration of processes to solve difficult technical, engineering related problems, while focusing on improving quality, cost, reliability, lower variability and maximizing the equipment efficiency for our products.
  • Transfer automation equipment and process technology from division to plant operations.
  • Provide technical expertise, to ensure timely trouble-shooting on automation equipment related problems (such as robot arms teaching, precision device calibration, sequence optimization etc.) and develop basic understanding of process requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership and expertise to design, develop, and deploy integrated manufacturing systems to global manufacturing facilities Key Accountabilities:
  • To provide engineering expertise and leadership for equipment, process, methods and measurement technologies within the Environmental Technologies - Division Engineering Finishing Department. Lead technology and engineering project sub-teams. Role includes individual contributor and project workstream leadership responsibilities.

 

Detailed Responsibilities include:

  • Plan, organize and execute major workstreams on projects to deliver improvement and step change capabilities
  • Project work scope typically includes design, development, manufacturing implementation, start-up and acceptance
  • Ready to participate in all phases of projects including design, vendor selection and management, fabrication, integration and testing, installation, production start-up support, training of plant personnel and technology transfer.
  • Support development and execution of the Division Finishing technology strategy, roadmap and project portfolio as it relates to Material/Part Handling and Automation
  • Defines and documents equipment design specifications, develops equipment design concepts, design and follows construction of prototype and production equipment, conducts proof of concept tests, collects and evaluates data, and makes engineering recommendations.
  • Collaborate with external machine builders, systems integrators, and suppliers to specify and successfully deliver fully integrated equipment systems to the business/plant on-time, on-budget, and in satisfaction of process performance measures.
  • Assures safety of operators and equipment and aligns with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Create/update documentation for release to production including machine specifications, operating procedures and drawing packages.

 

Projects Involved with:

  • Developing new and improving existing manufacturing technologies, process, and equipment – specific to automated process machines, material handling systems, and flexible automation in Corning manufacturing plants and processes. Member of multi-functional project teams responsible for concept generation / certification, technology development, detail design / build, and start-up of automation and process machine systems in manufacturing.

 

Role Within Group:

  • Provide project workstream leadership, technical and process engineering skills to meet department goals and objectives
  • Member of Division Engineering Finishing Technology Department. Representing Automation and Part Handling focus area.
  • Work with and facilitate alignment between manufacturing, development, engineering and process specialists to deliver step change and improvement of process or equipment capabilities.

 

Required Skills:

  • Experience in successfully developing and delivering technical projects or process improvements into manufacturing.
  • Effective communications: translate work, solutions, and directions into presentations to leadership that can be understood and are measurable
  • Project leadership aptitude, including ability to achieve results through matrix organization or team.
  • Work with project team to solve difficult automation problems, resolve project related issues, and develop fundamental understanding of technical / process requirements critical to system success.
  • Experience on automation equipment design and integration such as material handling, robotics, conveyor, facility Automation
  • Able to work independently and directly to create detailed written project scopes, identify project requirements and deliverables, satisfy their objectives and timelines with a minimal amount of supervision.
  • Familiar with Risk Assessment and Safety aspects related to equipment design.
  • Report on project activities on a pre-determined basis. Ensure results meet the customer’s requirements and standards (both national and international design standards).
  • Lead or participate in Hardware & Software design reviews, FAT, Installation, SAT, equipment Startup meet equipment scope and specifications
  • Support design of fully integrated machine tools / motion control systems, robot cells, and safety systems. Work with external system integrators and machine builders to successfully deliver fully integrated process equipment systems to Corning’s plants on-time, on-budget, and that satisfy performance measures

 

Education / Experience:

  • We require a BS/MS in an engineering field (mechanical, materials, preferred)
  • We are seeking a minimum 7 of experience in manufacturing, engineering or development
  • Leadership potential demonstrated on project teams responsible for implementation of new equipment and process integration into manufacturing

 

Desired Skill:

  • Demonstrated results developing and delivering step change innovations to manufacturing
  • Experience with application of KT, MEE, DMAIC and MIE methodologies, as well as, 6-Sigma methods
  • Project management experience, including developing project/equipment scope, Specifications based on business/division requirements with a keen focus on return on investment and TCO, as well as, budgets and schedules
  • Understands regulations applicable to area of expertise and works to ensure compliance (ANSI RIA, NEC, NFPA, CE, ISO 13849, etc.)
  • Experience with process controls, automation, packing/packaging, robots and integration of processes
  • Support development of control architectures, control functional specification, and system integration requirements that will satisfy process and manufacturing requirements.
  • Establish and update system SOS/PM/SOP as needed and ensure all procedures are properly written and followed
  • Familiar with IT tolerance, Pneumatic, Hydraulic and Mechanical components.
  • Experience with 2D/3D CAD, SolidWorks and AutoCAD

 

Travel Requirements:

  • Travel should be expected, dependent on project assignments. International travel is possible. Typical travel requirement is 25-45%.

 

Work Hours:

  • 40+ hours per week
