Scope of Position:

This position is for a post-doctoral scientist in Corning’s fundamental research division to work specifically on advanced optical fiber research projects. The candidate should have deep understanding of electromagnetic applied to waveguides, including understanding of different light guidance mechanisms and familiarity with modeling approaches. The candidate should be knowledgeable on fabrication and experimental characterization of novel optical fibers, including micro-structured fibers.


As the world leading optical fiber manufacturer, Corning continues to explore ways to improve the existing fiber fabrication processes as well as ways to make new fiber types. We are looking for a team player who has extensive hands-on experience in fiber-making and proven problem-solving skills. The scientist will have opportunities to collaborate with subject matter experts in optical fibers and influence the next generation optical fiber products.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate different designs, guidance and attenuation mechanisms and other optical properties • Plan and execute optical fiber fabrication processes
  • Acquire and analysis fabrication and characterization data
  • Proposed methods and procedures to continuously improve the fabrication process
  • Closely collaborate with cross-functional teams in defining work streams


Education and Experience: 

  • Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related fields


Required Skills:

  • Team player, ability to work effectively in cross-functional team
  • 3+ years hands-on experiences of microstructure optical fiber fabrication, including preform making and fiber draw
  • Experiences on fiber fabrication process including temperature, tension, pressure delivery and monitoring
  • In-depth understanding and design experiences of various types of optical fibers


Desired Skills:

  • 2+ years of optical fiber characterization, attenuation measurements, modal content measurements
  • Modeling experiences of preform and optical fiber fabrication


Soft Skills:

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity
  • Experiences of data acquisition and analysis
  • Experiences of technical presentations to audience with broad backgrounds
  • Experiences of leading research projects



Travel requirements:

<5% Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours per week ​​​​​​​
