This position of Multi-Discipline Engineer I is in the Science and Technology (Research) Division of Corning Incorporated. We are looking for scientists and engineers with the ability to creatively solve problems and provide solutions to address some of the most pressing challenges to our businesses and define future research directions. The candidate for this position should have a track record of working in team environments, applying the fundamentals of their discipline, defining and executing experiments, and summarizing results to provide novel solutions involving the integration of optical, mechanical, and electrical components. Additionally, the candidate should be able to support emerging (short and long term) technical challenges that benefit from integrated systems and collaborate with a wide range of scientists and engineers to develop solutions. Technical challenges can range in markets from optical communications to display technologies to life sciences and involve optical-electrical-mechanical applications such as; photonics and passive/active optical components, materials, free-space optics, waveguides, sensors, controls, software/hardware integration, image processing, and optoelectronics. Our environment is dynamic and projects can be fast-paced; we expect our scientists and engineers to be agile and rapidly build up new capabilities as the need arises. Most importantly, we expect our scientists and engineers to want to be a part of a team of creative and inventive problem solvers.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities: Through an understanding of customer problem statements you will identify potential solutions as you collaborate with scientists and engineers, develop novel approaches to solve complex problems, and make quick critical experiments to demonstrate feasibility.

 

Additional responsibilities include:

• Designing and executing experiments, providing data analysis, and providing guidance to teams;

• Interacting with project team members in collaborating fields (optics, mechanics, electronics, etc.);

• Working in a lab environment to correlate critical experiments results with modeling results;

• Documenting results for internal and external publications;

• Purchasing equipment, tracking delivery, and receipt of material for projects.

 

Travel requirements (please note if international): Occasional international and domestic travel based on business needs. A reasonable estimate is 1-3 trips per year.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 Hours/Week

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

M.S. in Engineering related degree or Physics with 0-3 years’ experience or BS with 6-10 years of industrial experience designing and/or testing optomechanical or electromechanical devices, systems, or products.

 

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates must possess):

• Demonstrated ability to integrate hardware, electronics, and software;

• Capability of developing experiment plans (DOE), laboratory set-up, and executing experiments;

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel products;

• Ability for occasional international and domestic travel based on business needs.

 

Desired Skills (these are the skills that would be nice for candidates to possess):

• Data processing experience (eg Microsoft Excel, MATLAB, etc);

• Familiarity with controls software (eg LabView);

• CAD experience (eg SolidWorks or AutoCAD);

• Experience with optical design and CAD software such as Zemax or CodeV;

• Well-developed social and communication skills with an ability to work both independently and in high-performance interdisciplinary teams.
