Corning’s Environmental Technologies segment manufactures ceramic substrates and filter products for emissions control in mobile and stationary applications around the world.
Scope of Position
Join Corning's Environmental Technologies Division as a senior-level engineer within the Measurements Innovation Group. In this role, you will manage projects and lead the development, assembly, testing, and deployment of advanced computer vision measurement systems. Your work will include algorithm development, software programming, and image processing to optimize manufacturing process control and ensure precise inspection of CET products. Additionally, you will be responsible for guiding the transfer of these technologies from the development phase to full-scale manufacturing, ensuring seamless integration and operational excellence.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Lead and manage engineering projects focused on developing computer vision measurement systems incorporating machine learning, convolutional neural networks (CNN), and AI technologies.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement algorithms for image processing, dimensional measurement and data analysis using machine learning techniques.
- Develop and refine software programs essential for system functionality and performance, integrating AI capabilities.
- Oversee the assembly and testing of measurement systems to ensure they meet quality and performance standards.
- Utilize CNNs and other AI models to enhance image recognition and processing tasks.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues that arise during development and deployment.
- Coordinate with manufacturing teams to ensure the smooth transfer of technology from development to production.
- Conduct regular performance assessments (onsite or remote) of deployed systems to identify and implement improvements.
- Document technical processes, system requirements, and project progress for internal and external stakeholders.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in computer vision, machine learning, and AI technologies to drive innovation.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers and team members, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
- You will also be responsible for training engineering, maintenance and operations people in how to use and maintain measurement systems.
- Travel Requirements: 20-40% travel. 1 day to several week trips are typical.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Master's Degree required, highly prefer PhD in Math, Physics, Optics, ME, ECE or EE plus a minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience with programming and computer vision system development.
- Extensive experience in engineering roles, with a track record of leading complex projects in computer vision and image processing systems.
- Proficiency in machine learning and AI technologies, including the development and application of convolutional neural networks (CNN).
- Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, C# (strongly preferred), with experience in software development for engineering applications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, TFS.
- Proven ability to design, implement, and optimize algorithms for image processing and analysis.
- Experience in project management, with demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage projects from inception to deployment.
- Hands-on experience in transferring technology from development to manufacturing environments, ensuring seamless integration and operational success.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues efficiently.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of effectively documenting processes and presenting technical information to diverse audiences.
- Ability to stay updated with the latest advancements in computer vision, machine learning, and AI technologies, applying them to drive innovation.
- Leadership skills to mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Advanced degrees in Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields with specialization in computer vision, machine learning, or AI.
- Experience in developing and deploying scalable computer vision systems in industrial or manufacturing settings.
- Familiarity with machine learning frameworks and libraries, such as TensorFlow, PyTorch.
- Familiarity with advanced image processing frameworks and libraries, such as Halcon, OpenCV.
- Familiarity with X-Ray CT technology is a plus.
- Expertise in designing and optimizing convolutional neural networks (CNN) for specific image processing tasks.
- Strong understanding of hardware components, including motion control systems, cameras, lighting, and optics, to ensure optimal system performance.
- Experience in integrating AI-driven solutions into existing manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency and quality control.
- Strong background in algorithm development and the ability to innovate and apply theoretical concepts to practical applications.
- Experience with cloud-based computing environments or edge computing for real-time data processing.
- Ability to work collaboratively with R&D teams to explore new technologies and drive continuous improvement.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with experience in mentoring and developing junior engineers or team members.

The range for this position is $107,309.00 - $147,550.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
