If you're an automation engineer ready to move beyond single-site maintenance work and get hands-on experience across real capital projects — this is the opportunity to make that move. This position sits within Corning's MT&E Automation Controls Systems Engineering organization, where you'll support controls engineering projects from design and build through installation and commissioning, delivering PLC-based automation solutions for new equipment, factory expansions, and process improvements at Corning manufacturing facilities nationwide. You'll work alongside experienced engineers, plant teams, and system integrators — building the kind of multi-site, multi-phase project experience that seriously accelerates a controls engineering career.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support controls engineering projects through design, build, installation, startup, and commissioning phases.
  • Develop and modify PLC and HMI programs for manufacturing equipment and automation systems.
  • Participate in the development of control architectures, functional specifications, and system integration requirements based on process and manufacturing needs.
  • Work with internal engineering teams, plant personnel, and external system integrators or machine builders to deliver automation solutions.
  • Review and interpret electrical schematics, panel layouts, and controls documentation; support updates during project execution.
  • Assist with offline testing, equipment integration, field installation, and production startup support.
  • Troubleshoot controls and automation issues related to programming, integration, and system performance.
  • Support industrial networking and communications required for machine and system integration.
  • Document engineering work, project updates, and technical results to support execution and handoff.

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional, non-academic experience in industrial controls, automation, or machine control engineering.
  • Experience with PLC programming in platforms such as Rockwell / Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or Omron.
  • Experience with control systems design, HMI development, and closed-loop control systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical schematics, industrial networking, and controls integration in manufacturing, OEM, or system integration environments.
  • Must be available for significant travel, primarily domestic, to support project build, installation, and commissioning activities.

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • Experience supporting automation projects through design, integration, startup, or commissioning.
  • Experience with FactoryTalk View, Ignition, iFix, or Optix.
  • Knowledge of EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, Profinet, or related industrial communication protocols.
  • Experience with PID controls, control loop tuning, robotics, or machine vision.
  • Familiarity with tools or languages such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, C#, Python, HTML, or MATLAB.
