Role Purpose
Corning Glass Innovations is seeking a member of its design team to serve as the team's technical expert in precision mechanical design for new high-temperature glass manufacturing equipment. This role provides technical leadership and decision making on precision mechanical design, including design reviews, risk assessments, and technical forums, and advances the precision design methods and standards used in new equipment development. The role leads the mechanical design of complex, high-precision equipment from concept through detailed design, fabrication, installation, and start-up, ensuring all quality, cost, and safety requirements are met. It also partners with the Science and Technology Division and manufacturing sites to deliver new technology into Corning's plants.
Key Responsibilities
- Setting technical direction for the mechanical design of new equipment
- Defining tolerancing strategies, tolerance stack-ups, and error budgets to ensure functional precision and manufacturability
- Performing and directing FEA and multiphysics analysis to guide design decisions
- Designing for thermal and dimensional stability in high-temperature environments, including thermal expansion, distortion, and creep
- Applying precision machine design principles to equipment architecture and motion systems
- Providing independent technical review of designs, and leading design reviews and risk assessments
- Driving innovation: developing new equipment concepts and contributing to technology roadmaps and intellectual property
- Leading the technical scope of multi-site projects, working with project leaders on scope, schedule, and budget
- Communicating technical decisions and results to management
- Interacting with domestic and international manufacturing sites and the Science and Technology Division
Travel and Hours:
- 20% combined local, national, and international
- Monday-Friday 8am-5pm flex hours as needed
Experiences/Education - Required
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (e.g., Aerospace Engineering) required; Masters preferred
- 8-10 + years of mechanical design experience, including precision machinery or equipment (e.g., semiconductor, optics, aerospace, machine tools, or high-temperature process equipment)
- Demonstrated record of designing and delivering complex, high-precision equipment from concept through implementation
- Experience applying a multidisciplinary approach to design and to solving difficult manufacturing problems
- Glass industry experience not required
- Expert-level mechanical design, including GD&T, tolerance analysis, and stack-up / error budgeting
- Deep knowledge of precision machine design principles, including stiffness, exact constraint, alignment, and thermal and dimensional stability
- Strong structural and thermal analysis skills, with multiphysics modeling experience (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL, Abaqus)
- Strong understanding of fabrication and machining processes and their impact on achievable tolerances
- Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
- Recognized technical expertise, serving as a go-to resource on complex mechanical design problems
- Ability to lead through influence rather than direct authority, including with international teams across time zones and cultures
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Glass melting and/or forming equipment experience
- Knowledge of high-temperature materials (refractory, precious metal, and ceramic) and their mechanical behavior
- Precision motion control and metrology / measurement systems experience
- Record of invention, patents, or technical publications
- Manufacturing plant experience, including equipment installation and start-up
