Scope of Position

Join Corning's Environmental Technologies (CET) Division as a Smart Robot Intern within the Measurements and Controls Group. In this role, you will help design, prototype, test, and deploy intelligent robotic systems automation and control solutions. Your work will involve robot perception, motion planning, controls, and software integration to improve process efficiency, quality, and safety. You will collaborate with senior engineers and support the transition of robotic technologies from development to pilot lines and manufacturing.

Day to Day Responsibilities

  • Contribute to engineering projects focused on developing smart robotic systems leveraging AI, computer vision, and automation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement perception, motion, and control algorithms.
  • Develop and refine software using Python/C# and ROS/ROS 2 for robot behaviors and system integration.
  • Participate in building, wiring, and configuring robotic prototypes, sensors (e.g., cameras, LiDAR, force/torque), and end effectors.
  • Create simulation environments and run experiments in Gazebo, Isaac Sim, or similar tools to validate concepts.
  •  Apply deep learning models to enhance perception tasks such as object detection, pose estimation, and grasp planning.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues across hardware and software during development and deployment.
  • Support on-floor trials, data collection, and performance assessments to drive iterative improvements.
  • Document technical processes, system requirements, test plans, and project progress for internal stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s Master’s or PhD’s degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • 0-1 years of experience through coursework, labs, projects, or internships in robotics or automation.
  • Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2026 (May-August 2026) with a graduation date of December 2026  or later
  • Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity.
  • Be willing to work at the posted job location

Required Experience/Skills:

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or C#(strongly preferred).
  • Experience with ROS or ROS 2 for robot software development and integration.
  • Ability to design, implement, and test algorithms for perception, motion planning, and control.
  • Basic understanding of robot kinematics, dynamics, and feedback control.
  • Familiarity with machine learning and AI technologies applied to robotic perception.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware (cameras, sensors, actuators, and embedded controllers).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Desired Experience/Skills:

  • Experience with robotics simulation tools such as Gazebo, Isaac Sim, Webots, or RViz.
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch; and with OpenCV and PCL for perception.
  • Experience with motion planning and control libraries (e.g., MoveIt, OMPL).
  • Exposure to industrial or collaborative robots (e.g., UR, FANUC, ABB, KUKA) and end-effectors.
  • Experience with embedded/edge platforms (e.g., NVIDIA Jetson, Raspberry Pi) and real-time considerations.
  • Experience in a manufacturing, warehouse, or lab automation setting is a plus.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based or edge computing environments for real-time data processing and fleet management.

  • Adaptability: Flexible in adjusting to changing project demands and technologies.

The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
