Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position: Serve as the computer and software infrastructure subject matter expert for measurement resources operated and managed by the Center for Fiber-Optic Testing. Primary responsibilities will be with the development, operation, modification, and troubleshooting of software and measurement computer systems equipment. Situational support for fiber production facilities, Sullivan Park, and the production-based cable test labs is also included.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Measurement Systems Development
  • Provide organization and leadership to the CFT’s efforts in measurement system development and improvement.
  • Member of cross-functional teams responsible for concept generation, technology development, detailed design, building, qualification and implementation of measurement systems in a laboratory setting.
  • Participate in the development of software architectures, software functional specifications, and system integration requirements that will satisfy the measurement requirements. Measurements Systems Support
  • Understand and implement hardware and software solutions for measurement systems.
  • Support troubleshooting, updating, and enhancing existing measurement systems.
  • Update/develop system and training documentation for measurement systems.
  • Ensure measurement data is stored/backed up in safe and secure locations.
  • Provide situational software support to other OFC organizations and associated applied research/development functions Support Corporate IT Initiatives
  • Ensure laboratory PCs are up to date with latest security updates distributed by Corporate IT.
  • Testing of monthly security updates to ensure there are no adverse effects on measurement systems.
  • Manage software version control on laboratory PCs where manual intervention is required.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of BS in Engineering or Computer Science with a strong background in code writing

 

Required Skills:

  • Extensive programming experience
  • Background in Visual Basic, Labview, C++, VB for Applications
  • Knowledge of databases, web applications, and controls
  • Knowledge of measurement-related equipment and instrumentation

 

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with multiple generations of operating systems: DOS, Win95, NT, etc. • Familiarity with PC hardware/software, deploying new/upgraded PCs and software installation.
  • Background in additional platforms such as MatLab, Adobe ColdFusion, Oracle SQL, Microsoft Office Applications, etc.
  • Controls/Electrical Experience
  • Measurements Engineering experience.
  • Base understanding of statistical analysis regression, standard deviation, gauge R&R, etc
  • Optical fiber exposure/experience
  • Basic project management skills (e.g. scoping, budgeting, timelines etc.)
