Role Purpose

Bridges the gap between research, engineering/production, and commercial/customers organizations to develop new products, processes, technologies and metrology. Support the transfer of technology from research into manufacturing or engineering. Recognized as an expert in one or more areas of science or technology. Protects Corning’s Intellectual Property as well as looks for opportunities for new IP establishment. Applies fundamental knowledge toward the development and evaluation of new and adjacent product, process, and equipment technologies that create economic benefit for Corning

 

Location:
This position will be located in Corning, NY until Q2 2026, at which time it will be permanently relocated to Wilmington, NC.
•    Candidates local to Corning, NY, must be willing to relocate to Wilmington, NC.
•    Candidates local to Wilmington, NC will be required to travel frequently or be temporarily based in Corning, NY until the move in 2026.

 

Responsibilities:
•    Develop, lead, and/or facilitate the development of measurement methods and capabilities for the characterization and evaluation of key attributes for existing, new, or modified products or their associated manufacturing processes. Measurement development activities include both optical fiber and optical fiber cable processes and products.
•    Serve as the leader and liaison for the development of measurement technology as well as its transfer from research and development functions to receiving activities in optical fiber and cable manufacturing and/or measurement organizations.
•    Provide progress reports to key stakeholders and organizational leadership
•    Actively engage with key manufacturing and development activities to canvass/identify measurement develop needs that provide enhanced product attributes, cost reductions, or other competitive advantages. 
•    Work with stakeholders to identify priority activities.
•    Provide technical and/or training support relating to inquiries arising from manufacturing or commercial functions. Solutions may be generated through researching available data or through the design and execution of experiments to generate new data.
•    Receive, analyze, and publish test results, including comparison against acceptance criteria and statistical analysis, where applicable.
•    Collaborate with other fiber organizations (R&D, Eng. & mfg.) to ensure metrology synergy.

 

Qualifications:

Education: BS in Optics, Electrical Engineering or related applicable science field
 
Required Skills and Experience:
•    5+ years’ work experience in systems development, optical test equipment and/or manufacturing.


•    5 years of experience working with Fiber Optic, and optical and electronic instrumentation and measurement methods.
•    5 years of experience working with industry standards (ISO/IEC).
•    3+years of experience with LabView and/or Visual Basic programming skills.
•    5 years of Experience with process improvement (6-Sigma), gage repeatability, statistical analysis

 
Desired Skills:
•    Knowledge of optical fiber products and technology. 
•    Experience with setup and alignment of optical systems.
•    Critical thinker, strong analytical & technical problem-solving skills.

The range for this position is $139,499.00 - $191,812.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
