Scope of Position:

The successful candidate would work in the Laser Processing Research (LPR) department within the Applied Optical Physics directorate in Corning’s Research and Development Division. LPR leverages deep understanding of lasers sources, material science, machine learning, precision engineering, and optics to enable scalable manufacturable processes for current and future products ranging from fiber optics, photonic devices, quantum systems, pharmaceuticals, and consumer electronics. We seek scientists or engineers capable of combining optical physics and engineering principles to develop innovative laser-based micro-machining processes. Relevant experience includes optical design, laser systems, photonic systems, and software controls. The ideal senior laser processing scientist will perform multi-disciplinary research with other scientists, engineers, and technicians to design and conduct experiments, develop fundamental understanding of laser-matter interactions, develop tools to simulate laser-material interactions, and invent new processing methods that meet internal or external customer requirements.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Propose and execute new research concepts which advance fundamental understanding of light-matter (specifically, laser-glass) interactions

• Build subject matter expertise in optics, materials, and laser processes; consult or collaborate with other subject matter experts across various business units or research departments

• Translate experimental results and theoretical insights into new passive or active optical products or manufacturable processes

• Develop scalable metrological processes;

• Integrate controls and diagnostic tools for monitoring and optimizing laser processes

• Document system designs and results; generate and file invention disclosures

• Integrate optical components onto work benches designed for laser micro-machining (ablating, cutting, welding, etc.)

Travel requirements (please note if international): • < 10% domestic, with occasional international travel required

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: • 40 hours/week, 8am-5pm during weekdays, with flexibility

 

Education and Experience:

• PhD degree in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Physical Chemistry, Materials Science (>5 yr. post-graduate professional or military experience)

• MS degree in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering , Material Science (>10 yr. professional or military experience)

 

Required Skills:

• Expertise with laser systems, notably mode-locked fiber or solid-state lasers

• Demonstrated working knowledge of optics and materials properties

• Working knowledge of light-matter interactions or laser micro-machining techniques

• Strong problem-solving skills

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• Demonstrated expertise in numerical analysis techniques, optical modeling, or beam propagation software

 

Desired Skills:  

• Expertise controlling laboratory equipment

• Practical experience using CAD tools

• Microwave photonics

• Project management
