Position Description Lead efforts to anticipate and mitigate failure modes of materials, design and process in product development initiatives. Collaborate with research, development, manufacturing, commercial, and other teams to understand the opportunity, describe solution concepts, and identify failure modes by assessing concept functionality and how well it meets the needs of the opportunity. Develop fundamental understanding of physics of failure to determine root cause and make recommendations to improve performance. Define testing to characterize functionality and quantify reliability via failure rate calculations/ modeling/ life predictions. Ensure problems are addressed for efficient development of robust products and processes with fewer failure modes and longer life times.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

1. Define customized reliability programs to ensure product meets reliability requirements and process delivers the design: • Understand requirements and potential solution concept(s). • Assessment: Develop an understanding of product and material performance under application conditions, and potential effects of the process on the design intent via engineering judgement, testing and/or modeling. • Identify potential failure modes. • Develop and lead an experimental and characterization strategy to produce deeper insight from which root cause can be understood and materials/ design/ process recommendations suggested.

 

2. Creation of Experimental plans (DOE) and execution to generate data for life predictions

 

3. Develop new acceleration techniques for early identification of potential problems.

 

4. Failure Mode/ Root Cause Analysis/ Problem Solving & Corrective Actions. Interact with technical experts as required for insight and problem solving; explore broad solution space.

 

5. Statistical data analysis, evaluation and interpretation

 

6. Risk assessments and reliability calculations (failure rates, life time estimates, etc.)

 

7. Identification and translation of applicable product standards/ technical specs into reliability assessment activities

 

8. Validate that corrective actions fix the issue

 

9. Communication of plans and updates to appropriate personnel. Engage with Commercial to ensure customer needs are being met.

 

Requirements

 

Physics of Failure/ Material property knowledge, preferably including fracture mechanics

A Phd or a  Master’s Degree with experience is desired, preferably in a technical discipline combined with 5 years’ experience in design assessment/ predictive models. Certification as a Reliability Engineer is also a plus.

Lead, run and facilitate effective design assessment and optimization sessions

Reliability Engineering/ Statistics

High competency with reliability tools (FMEA, QFD, RCA, FTA, WCA, Life predictions, etc.)

Experimental skills – test methods execution and ability to improve

Experience with product standards/ technical specifications and translation into reliability requirements

Results & detail oriented, Rigorous, Self-motivated, Flexible, Multi-tasking, Leadership, Honesty

Ability to work successfully across organizations: research, development, manufacturing, commercial

Critical thinking/ problem solving with ability to make connections with broad knowledge of materials, physical properties, test methods and failure mechanisms (including multi-material systems; and electrical & optical).

Understands technology - can lead design assessments and suggests design improvements

Environmental stress testing methodology knowledge (temp, humidity, power, mechanical, vibration, HALT, HASS, etc.)

Broad material/ chemistry training/ experience

Brittle Material, Glass and Ceramics knowledge

Working knowledge of characterization techniques – how to apply and interpret results

Reliability evaluation of multi-material systems from a systems perspective.

Strong facilitation and collaboration skills to enable leading of teams through ambiguous evaluations.
