Corning is one of the world’s leading innovators in materials science. For more than 160 years, Corning has applied its unparalleled expertise in specialty glass, ceramics, and optical physics to develop products that have created new industries and transformed people’s lives.

At Corning, our growth is fueled by a commitment to innovation. We succeed through sustained investment in research & development, a unique combination of material and process innovation, and close collaboration with customers to solve tough technology challenges. We are a four-time National Medal of Technology winner thanks to our technology leadership and R&D environment, which attract and enable the best scientific minds in the world. This pipeline of talent has brought life-changing innovation to your fingertips for more than 160 years.

Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): Primary function is to support research and development of materials by developing and enabling material characterization. The individual will specifically support the development of glass property measurements relating to liquidus and viscosity techniques. The individual must have a solid and sound technical background in Geology, Material Science or Glass Science with extensive knowledge of crystal phases. Additionally, the individual is expected to have hands-on experience with identifying crystal phases. In this role, the person will develop techniques and conduct experiments to determine the liquidus and viscosity properties of glass and glass ceramics. Some glass science and glass ceramics knowledge will be necessary. The individual is also expected to work with other scientists to develop other new thermo-physical methods for non-routine measurements or processes.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Work with a cross functional lab team in a leading role to develop new methods for measuring liquidus and viscosity properties.

• Refine and extend existing concepts or proposed new concepts for measurement improvement

• Demonstrate feasibility of approach selected and reduce to practice for deployment

• Lead and provide hands-on measurement of technique developed

• Develop and manage testing plans

• Collaborating with teams on ideation and problem solving

• Support Thermo-physical lab as technical SME to interface with customers

• Conduct experiments to gain fundamental knowledge and address technical challenges

• Perform data analysis and interpretation

• Make recommendations to projects to improve functional performance of materials and processes as appropriate

• Develop new intellectual property

Travel requirements (please note if international): Variable but expectation is <15%
