Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): The Department of Mechanics and Reliability Sciences (MaRS), in the Science and Technology Division at Corning Incorporated combines deep knowledge of the mechanics of materials, measurement expertise, and an understanding of reliability science to discover, characterize and explore material/process/design challenges and failure modes. Our projects are fast-paced, and we expect our engineers/scientists to develop and lead an experimental and characterization strategy that produces deeper knowledge from which programs can demonstrate to go to new places. We build reliability, mechanics of materials, and failure prevention understanding across a broad range of products. Ensuring the reliability of these is a key requirement.

 

As the Senior Reliability Scientist, you will align to the overall Reliability Manager and contribute to the reliability efforts in support of innovation programs. Additionally, you will:

  • Provide technical leadership, strong fracture mechanics connecting theory and practice and versed at communicating knowledge up/down/across. i.e., senior leadership/ colleague/ customers /laymen. Lead can be from front or as participant within project/effort.
  • Partner with Product and Process leaders and perform deep understanding of product performance requirements, manufacturing process and product design
  • Provide recommendations to improve the performances.
  • Utilize your strong background in Fracture Mechanics or Mechanical Structure to help deliver the right support.
  • Utilize and collaborate with other reliability professionals to execute reliability plans.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Build fundamental understanding
  • Advancing knowledge, leveraging to solve problems/improved products and attributes.
  • Damage mechanics, surface and interface assessments.
  • Defining the problem, developing the pathway to solving/testing/DOE etc.
  • Perform reliability studies for specific projects
  • Perform FMEA and reliability risk assessment
  • Develop reliability testing and characterization plans prioritized by reliability risk level
  • Recommend product design and process changes to improve reliability
  • Work with product development, manufacturing, commercial, and customers to understand and translate needs into reliability requirements
  • Translate applicable product standards/technical specification into reliability assessment
  • Define, execute, and communicate reliability assessments, testing, understanding
  • Complete regular reporting to Reliability Manager meet the overall Reliability Strategy

Travel Requirements (please note if international): Limited travels could be required (depending on projects) either in Asia or Europe

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours/ week

Education and Experience:

  • Master of Science degree with specialization in Mechanical Structure or Fracture Mechanics.
  • PhD in Mechanical Structure or Fracture Mechanics.
  • Minimum of 5+ years' experience in Automotive R&D or Quality Organization.

Required Skills:

  • You will bring strong Fracture Mechanics or Mechanical Structure with a deep understanding of materials damage mechanisms
  • You are expected to have excellent written reporting (Microsoft Word and Power Point) and experimental skills (design new experiments and improve existing ones)
  • Focused and rigorous application of scientific methods
