Role Purpose

We are seeking a Senior Engineer to join the Life Safety Systems Engineering (LSSE) group within the Laboratory Services Management & Engineering (LSME) Department. This role is critical to supporting R&D activities by ensuring the effective design, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of hazardous gas monitoring and alarming systems across multiple Corning Valley locations.

 

In this position, you will serve as the technical expert for the Sullivan Park Hazardous Gas Monitoring System (HGMS), including its electronic controls, software, communication systems, and user interfaces. You will play a key role in protecting employees, facilities, and company assets by applying engineering expertise, relevant codes and standards, and industry best practices to life safety systems.

 

This role requires a highly collaborative engineer who is comfortable working across disciplines, partnering with laboratory owners, project managers, emergency response teams, facility operations, and external vendors to deliver safe, compliant, and reliable monitoring systems.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support for hazardous gas monitoring and alarming systems, including design, documentation, controller programming, and system commissioning
  • Serve as system owner for HGMS controls, communications, software, and user interfaces
  • Design electrical hardware and control circuits; develop PLC software and HMI applications
  • Maintain a flexible, modular, and rapidly deployable control system tailored to site needs
  • Produce and sustain design standards and modular template libraries
  • Coordinate installation, commissioning, calibration, maintenance, annual testing, and change control of HGMS systems
  • Support break/fix troubleshooting and hands-on system recovery as needed
  • Participate in project meetings and attend Process Hazard Review Board (PHRB) meetings as required
  • Work closely with lab owners and the PHRB to implement gas monitoring requirements
  • Supervise trades installation of HGMS systems and oversee engineering work on major-scope projects
  • Ensure system documentation is complete, accurate, and up to date
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements for system performance and reliability
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legal, industry, building, electrical, and safety code requirements
  • Act as a liaison with laboratory customers, Facility Operations, Workplace Services, Emergency Response Team, Security, and vendors

 

System Ownership Responsibilities

This role has direct responsibility for the total operation of:

  • Hazardous Gas Monitoring Systems (HGMS) electronic controls and user interfaces
  • Instrumentation configuration parameters
  • Ethernet communication interfaces with gas sensors and enterprise networks
  • Wago PLC electrical controls and software
  • Red Lion HMI interfaces and data collection
  • Gas sensor data models and Modbus implementation
  • Diagnostic circuits and cycle monitors for safety-critical hardware and software readiness
  • Interpretation of gas readings following emergency response events to help determine root cause

 

Shared Responsibilities

This role also provides shared system support for:

  • Simplex device installation
  • Administration of bypasses for hot work and special operating conditions
  • Technical assistance for Simplex and HGMS systems during emergency responses
  • System testing
  • On-call support and second-level project support

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in an industrial environment with building and/or process controls
  • Experience in electrical hardware design and software development
  • Experience supporting automation in a live operating environment, such as manufacturing, occupied facilities, or public utilities

 

Required Technical Skills

  • PLC programming using IEC 61131-3 languages, especially Structured Text and Function Block Diagram
  • HMI screen development, communications, and data collection
  • High proficiency with AutoCAD, including engineering drawings, block libraries, dynamic blocks, and text expressions
  • Full control system documentation in accordance with NFPA 79, including:
    • Electrical schematics
    • Panel assembly drawings
    • Equipment general arrangement drawings
    • Conduit plans
    • Interconnect diagrams
  • Ethernet and serial networking using industrial communication protocols
  • Expertise applying the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70)
  • Strong background in safety controls and safety-critical facility infrastructure
  • Control system design, troubleshooting, and support experience
  • Effective maintenance and testing experience
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills
  • Customer-facing experience and strong service orientation
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Wago or other CoDeSys-based PLCs
  • Experience with Red Lion Crimson software
  • Basic familiarity with Linux terminal commands
  • Knowledge of building automation systems and alarm systems
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local:
    • Building codes
    • Fire codes
    • Fuel gas codes
    • Mechanical codes
    • Machine safety codes
  • Expertise applying NFPA 72
  • Knowledge of gas detection technologies, including toxic, flammable, and oxygen depletion sensors
  • Hands-on debugging experience using tools such as a multimeter
  • Experience procuring control system components

The range for this position is $88,834.00 - $122,148.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
