Scope of Position

Thermal Equipment Design provides comprehensive design and engineering for Corning’s specialized processes.  Thermal equipment creates the process environment for material transformation and phase change.  

 

In this position you will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing projects related to design for melting, forming, heat treating, batching, and related process services. You may work on one or more projects and provide technical leadership on thermal equipment related projects. 

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership on one or more thermal equipment projects.
  • Propose, plan (scope), and implement projects requiring engineering analysis.
  • Comprehend and apply sound engineering principles in the design of thermally functioning process equipment.   
  • Application of engineering principles primarily in the fields of mechanical design, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics. Use of numerical and physical modeling.  
  • Create and review technical drawings, plans, and specifications using CAD software.
  • Collaboration with scientists and process experts as part of the engineering process.  
  • Collaboration with manufacturing operations to further define and receive new and modified process equipment.
  • Recommend/implement improvements to mechanical equipment.
  • Equipment installation supervision and on-site commissioning as required.
  • Coordinate with project managers and other team members to meet project goals.
  • Effectively communicate plans, progress, and problems to all concerned parties.
  • Develop and update engineering documentation.

Experiences/Education - Required

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering.  Chemical may be considered.
  • Minimum 5 years of project, engineering, and design experience.
  • Experience working in manufacturing or industrial environments.
  • Strong technical fundamentals with thermal equipment (such as furnaces, kilns, industrial ovens, lehrs, combustion systems, melting systems, heat transfer and heat treatment systems). 
  • Travel is required to Corning’s worldwide operations.  Frequency and duration vary according to project stage and status.    Travel may include project meetings, equipment installation, and system commissioning.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
  • Results oriented, delivery of tasks to project schedules.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.  Ability to communicate across research, development, engineering, commercial, and operations worldwide.

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • Knowledge of modeling for flow, thermal, and structural analysis, etc.
  • Experience with Solid Works, AutoCAD, Fluent, ANSYS, COMSOL, GOMA, etc…

The range for this position is $82,203.00 - $113,030.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
