Scope of Position:

A senior level engineering position in the Corning Environmental Technologies (CET) Division Engineering Measurements & Controls group that includes project management, development, assembly, test and deployment of measurement systems in support of manufacturing process control and inspection of CET products. You will be responsible for leading the transfer of technology from development to manufacturing.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Project management including creating project scopes, managing timelines and budgets, and acting as the primary customer interface.
  • As a project leader, you may be guiding the work of other engineers (mechanical, controls, process) to achieve the desired result.
  • Use off-the-shelf instruments or develop new measurement methods to optimize manufacturing processes or inspect the quality of Corning CET products.
  • Engineer measurement solutions that are suitable for use in manufacturing and leverage external suppliers for key technologies or strengths such as system integration.
  • You will work with a variety of multi-functional groups (Development, Quality, IT, Purchasing, Operations) to deliver effective solutions.
  • You will be responsible for defining Scopes of Work, quote when appropriate, issue Purchase Orders, track supplier work and approve invoices.
  • Design experiments and analyze data to identify and implement improvements to measurement systems or production processes.
  • Create/update documentation for release to production including Machine Specifications; operating procedures and drawing packages.
  • You will also be responsible for training engineering, maintenance and operations people how to use and maintain measurement systems.
  • Provide remote and onsite troubleshooting using data and performance analysis of the installed systems.


Travel Requirements:

  • 20-40% travel
  • 1 day to several week trips are typical.


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • 40 hrs/week
  • Expected to work hours required to successfully deliver project and support requirements.


Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD in Physics, Optics, ME, ECE or EE plus a minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience with machine vision metrology equipment.


Required Experience/Skills:

  • Experience with development of optical metrology systems, in particular Machine Vision system development (optics, lighting, cameras, image acquisition, image analysis)
  • Experience in developing scopes of work, and in managing project budgets, timelines and customer relations.
  • Systems Engineering and integration.
  • Experience with electrical/optical/mechanical installations, including system checkout and troubleshooting.
  • Fundamental knowledge of physical optics (principles of optics)
  • Microsoft Visual Studio programming (C# strongly preferred)
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Data retrieval, plotting and analysis.


Desired Experience/Skills:

  • Experience with image processing development packages such as Halcon, OpenCV, Cognex, Keyence, or Matlab image processing toolbox
  • Strong programming skills, Digital Signal Processing and control systems (PLCs).
  • Knowledge of image processing algorithms (blob analysis, edge finding, morphology, feature extraction, classification, metrology).
  • Process engineering knowledge.
  • Experienced with design of experiments, statistical analysis and process improvement.
  • Experience with Metrology, Inspection and Product Quality in support of production organizations.
  • Motion Control – ability to integrate motion on imaging platforms.
  • Computing – experience with high performance computing systems.


Soft Skills:

  • Ability to interact effectively with customers & coworkers as well as work independently.
  • You will need to be results oriented, a quick learner and be able to multi-task effectively.
