Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

This position will be located in Corning, NY until Q2 2026, at which time it will be permanently relocated to Wilmington, NC.

 

  • Candidates local to Corning, NY, must be willing to relocate to Wilmington, NC.
  • Candidates local to Wilmington, NC will be required to travel frequently or be temporarily based in Corning, NY until the move in 2026.

 

Corning is seeking a Metrology Engineer to support optical and environmental measurement systems within the Center for Fiber-Optic Testing. This role focuses on ensuring accurate, repeatable fiber-optic measurements and advancing metrology capabilities across Corning’s fiber organizations.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Provide engineering-level support for optical and environmental test equipment
  • Ensure reliable, standardized, and repeatable operation of metrology systems
  • Perform calibration, certification, maintenance, and troubleshooting of optical test equipment
  • Lead root-cause analysis and implement improvements to existing measurement systems
  • Support development of new fiber-optic measurement methods and systems
  • Collaborate with R&D, engineering, and manufacturing teams

 

Qualifications

 

  • BS in Optics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics
  • 5+ years of experience with optical test equipment, systems development, or manufacturing
  • Strong knowledge of measurement principles and instrumentation
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills
  • Familiarity with industry standards (ISO/IEC)

 

Preferred Experience

 

  • Optical fiber products and test methods
  • Optical system setup and alignment
  • LabVIEW and/or Visual Basic
  • Statistical analysis, gage R&R, or Six Sigma methodologies

 

Work Schedule: 40 hours/week, Monday–Friday

 

Relocation/Travel

 

  • Corning, NY candidates must be willing to relocate to Wilmington, NC in 2026
  • Wilmington, NC candidates must be willing to travel or work temporarily in Corning, NY until relocation

The range for this position is $112,902.00 - $155,240.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
