Scope of Position

The individual as a Senior Research Scientist will lead projects and provide technical leadership for ceramic process research and deliver processes and products to business. This person will develop new material compositions and processes to meet the requirements of new or existing businesses. This role will focus on compositional activities to enhance materials performance; processes will be developed (powder processing, forming, sintering both solid state and liquid phase) to produce desired components. Activities primarily focus on early stage process research and development. In addition, the individual should also be able to provide technical support to development and engineering, organizations through transferring processes and knowledge as necessary. The person is expected to have broad technical skills and experience as well as strong interpersonal skills to work with interdisciplinary teams of diverse cultural, educational and ethnic backgrounds. In addition, the individual is expected to have good presentation and excellent communication skills. Some travel is required.

 

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

1. Develop new inorganic crystalline materials (ceramics) and processes based on fundamental science with specific focus in chemistry, powder processing, forming and sintering.

2. Engage in process R&D work including experimental planning, execution, data analysis, and communicating results providing impact.

3. Collaborate with development, engineering and operational groups in developing and transferring fundamental understandings from evaluating new process and/or product concepts and be the champion for new process technology adoption.

4. Lead research technicians as required and be responsible for their daily activities.

 

Travel Requirements 10-20% of domestic and international travel may be required

Hours of work/work schedule/flextime Normal hours 8:00am-5:00pm; could have after-hours meetings/teleconferences as needed.

 

Required Education

Ph.D. degree in Physical/inorganic Chemistry, Ceramics or Materials Science with 2-3 years of relevant experience or Masters in Physical Chemistry, Ceramics or Materials Science with minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience.

 

Required Skills

1. Solid background in first principles of inorganic materials formulation and processing technology (compositions, milling/mixing, rheology, sintering) with emphasis on ceramics and glass ceramics.

2. Ability to work with people of diverse technical and cultural backgrounds.

3. Hands-on experimental skills, including use of forming equipment (extrusion, tape casting, dry and hot pressing) and milling/mixing equipment

4. Data analysis and ability to correlate data to real-life applications.

5. Good experience of office productive software, including MS Office, SharePoint, Scientific analyses software, etc.

4. Knowledge of catalysis particular in internal combustion engine after-treatment.
