Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
Provides subject matter expertise in engineering that improves product, process and/or equipment performance (cost, quality and service) and/or advances the innovation process to enable the delivery of new products. Provides solutions for increased process selects, increased material utilization, decreased costs, and improvement to product quality by planning, organizing and implementing projects. Is a leader in obtaining fundamental process understanding and meeting the lowest cost producer objectives
Designs and analyses first generation / next generation products, processes and/or equipment in support of a new product / technology introduction. Maintains knowledge of the latest developments in their area of expertise in order to identify and document any intellectual property developed as part of a project
Key Responsibilities
- Assigned to lead or support engineering project teams that are responsible to deliver robust, cost effective process machine and automation systems to Corning’s manufacturing plants and processes
- Work with project team members to solve difficult mechanical engineering and process equipment related problems, resolve project related issues, and develop fundamental understanding of process and equipment design requirements (material selection, error budgets, tolerance analysis, component specification, process requirements, machine functionality, etc)
- Defines and documents machine design specifications, project schedules and budgets
- Develops mechanical design concepts, designs and follows construction of prototype and production process equipment, conducts proof of concept tests, collects and evaluates data, and makes appropriate engineering recommendations
- Interface with external machine builders, system integrators, and suppliers to specify and successfully deliver fully integrated process machine systems to their internal Customers on-time, on-budget, and in satisfaction of process performance measures
- Prepares or directs the generation of construction drawings, installation drawings, and ensures that final drawing packages reflect as-built conditions and satisfies Corning drawing standards
- Actively participates in system integration /debug, installation, production start-up, and training of plant personnel
- Report on project activities on a pre-determined basis. Ensure results meet the customer’s requirements and standards
- Maintain records and track expenditures against allocated funds. Estimate time required to accomplish tasks and monitor performance against schedules
- Individual must be capable of executing project assignments, in a highly matrixed team-based environment with minimal supervision
Required Education
- High level of technical curiosity that will enable unique solutions to the technical challenges incumbent in the position
- B.S. Mechanical Engineering
- Strong fundamental understanding of mechanical design practices, flexible automation, robotics, material handling, and system integration including development of process machine /system design specifications, error budgets, and proof of principle testing
- Min. 10 years experience developing and delivering fully integrated machine /automation systems to manufacturing requiring the integration of commercially available technologies into robust process manufacturing solutions
- Familiar with state-of-the-art technologies in the following areas: electro-mechanical drive systems, fluid power, pneumatics, robotics, material handling, alignment, part sensing, and safety standards
- Demonstrated ability to effectively leverage and manage external machine builders and system integrators for detail design, build, and integration of later stages of machine system implementation

The range for this position is $94,161.00 - $129,472.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
