Role Purpose
Corning is seeking a Measurements & Controls Engineer to support measurement, inspection, controls, and automation systems within our Solar Modular manufacturing operation. This role is responsible for supporting the development, implementation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of systems used to monitor and control manufacturing processes and verify product quality.
The Measurements & Controls Engineer will work closely with Operations, Process Engineering, Equipment Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and other technical teams to improve measurement capability, process control, equipment performance, and manufacturing reliability. This role provides an opportunity for an early-career engineer to develop hands-on expertise in manufacturing measurement, controls, automation, and inspection technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day engineering support for manufacturing measurement, inspection, controls, instrumentation, and automation systems, including troubleshooting issues affecting equipment performance, process stability, or product quality.
- Monitor system performance and manufacturing data to identify trends, abnormalities, and opportunities to improve process capability, reliability, yield, quality, and efficiency.
- Develop, implement, optimize, and sustain measurement and inspection systems used to monitor manufacturing processes and critical product characteristics.
- Perform or support Measurement System Analysis (MSA), Gauge R&R, capability studies, calibration activities, and other evaluations to verify measurement-system accuracy and performance.
- Partner with Process Engineering, Equipment Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and Operations to define measurement and controls requirements and resolve manufacturing issues.
- Develop and execute experiments and test plans to evaluate, validate, and optimize new or modified measurement, inspection, controls, and automation technologies.
- Participate in the installation, start-up, commissioning, qualification, and optimization of new manufacturing systems and equipment.
- Support the integration and troubleshooting of sensors, instrumentation, vision systems, data-acquisition systems, PLCs, HMIs, and other manufacturing technologies.
- Apply structured problem-solving and data-analysis methods to identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and drive sustainable improvements.
- Provide measurement and controls expertise for PFMEA, Control Plans, process qualification, equipment qualification, and change-management activities.
- Collaborate with equipment manufacturers and technology suppliers to define technical requirements, troubleshoot issues, and implement new systems or capabilities.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, specifications, calibration requirements, operating procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
- Share technical knowledge and provide guidance to technicians, engineers, and manufacturing team members while promoting a strong safety, quality, and continuous-improvement culture.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related engineering or technical discipline.
- 2 or more years of experience in measurement systems, controls, automation, instrumentation, manufacturing engineering, or a related technical environment.
- Demonstrated ability to apply engineering principles, data analysis, and structured problem-solving methods to manufacturing, equipment, or measurement-related problems.
- Working knowledge of measurement systems, instrumentation, sensors, controls, automation, or data-acquisition technologies.
- Understanding of fundamental measurement concepts, including accuracy, precision, calibration, repeatability, reproducibility, and sources of variation.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, schematics, and engineering documentation.
- Ability to work effectively in a hands-on manufacturing environment and collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and other cross-functional teams.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Hands-on experience through employment, internship, co-op, or research involving measurement systems, controls, automation, instrumentation, manufacturing, or inspection technologies.
- Experience in solar, semiconductor, glass, electronics, or other high-volume, technically complex manufacturing environments.
- Experience with industrial automation technologies such as PLCs, HMIs, sensors, machine vision, industrial communications, data-acquisition systems, or motion-control systems.
- Experience with machine vision, image processing, optical inspection, dimensional measurement, or automated inspection technologies.
- Familiarity with statistical engineering and measurement methods, including Measurement System Analysis (MSA), Gauge R&R, Statistical Process Control (SPC), and process capability analysis.
- Experience with programming, scripting, industrial controls, manufacturing data analysis, or visualization tools such as Excel or Power BI.
- Experience applying structured problem-solving and continuous-improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, DMAIC, 5-Why, or root-cause analysis; Six Sigma Green Belt or similar training is preferred.
- Experience supporting equipment or system installation, commissioning, start-up, qualification, manufacturing trials, or new technology deployment.
Travel Requirements
- Minimal travel may be required based on business, supplier, equipment, and project needs.
Work Schedule
- Core work hours are generally Monday through Friday.
- Flexibility may be required to support manufacturing troubleshooting, installations, start-ups, trials, and other production needs outside normal working hours.
