Role Purpose

Corning is seeking a Quality Engineer to support product and process quality within our Solar Modular manufacturing operation. This role is responsible for monitoring manufacturing quality performance, identifying process and product quality issues, supporting root-cause investigations, and implementing improvements that reduce defects and improve process capability.

The Quality Engineer will work closely with Operations, Process Engineering, Equipment Engineering, Measurements & Controls, and Quality teams to ensure manufacturing processes consistently meet established product and quality requirements. This role provides an opportunity for an early-career engineer to develop hands-on expertise in manufacturing quality, statistical analysis, process control, and structured problem solving.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day quality engineering support for Solar Modular manufacturing processes and production activities.
  • Monitor product and process quality performance and identify trends, abnormalities, defects, or conditions requiring investigation.
  • Analyze manufacturing and quality data to identify sources of variation and opportunities to improve product quality, yield, and process capability.
  • Lead or support investigation of manufacturing quality issues using structured problem-solving methods to identify root causes and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Partner with Operations, Process Engineering, Equipment Engineering, Measurements & Controls, and other technical teams to resolve product and process quality concerns.
  • Support containment, evaluation, and disposition of nonconforming product according to established quality procedures.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate process quality controls, inspection criteria, sampling methods, specifications, and quality documentation.
  • Apply Statistical Process Control (SPC) and other statistical tools to monitor manufacturing processes and identify potential quality risks.
  • Participate in PFMEA, Control Plan, Measurement System Analysis (MSA), Gauge R&R, process capability, and other quality-planning activities.
  • Support product and process qualifications, manufacturing trials, process changes, and new product introductions.
  • Partner with Measurements & Controls and Process Engineering to ensure measurement methods and inspection systems are capable of detecting and controlling critical product characteristics.
  • Support corrective and preventive action activities and verify effectiveness of implemented improvements.
  • Support internal quality audits and compliance with established Quality Management System requirements.
  • Collaborate with production teams to improve adherence to process controls, inspection requirements, and quality standards.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on defect reduction, yield improvement, scrap reduction, process capability, and manufacturing consistency.
  • Develop and maintain quality reports, process-quality metrics, investigation documentation, and other technical records.
  • Promote a strong culture of quality, safety, continuous improvement, and quality at the source throughout the manufacturing operation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Materials Science, or another related technical discipline.
  • Entry level experience (1 or more years) with Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering, Process Engineering, or another related technical environment.
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude and ability to apply engineering and quality principles to manufacturing problems.
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing quality, process control, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to use manufacturing and quality data to support technical decisions.
  • Basic understanding of statistical concepts and their application to manufacturing processes.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify product and process quality abnormalities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Operations, Engineering, Quality, and other cross-functional partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently as well as within a team.
  • Ability to work effectively in a hands-on manufacturing environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Internship, co-op, or other experience in manufacturing quality, process engineering, manufacturing engineering, or production operations.
  • Experience in solar module, wafer, semiconductor, electronics, glass, or other technically complex manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with SPC, PFMEA, Control Plans, MSA, Gauge R&R, process capability, 8D, 5 Why, or root-cause analysis.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 or other manufacturing Quality Management Systems.
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, or interpreting manufacturing and quality data.
  • Experience with data-analysis or visualization tools such as Excel, Minitab, or Power BI.
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, DMAIC, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience participating in process qualifications, manufacturing trials, new product introduction, or manufacturing start-up activities.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification or related continuous improvement training.

Work Schedule

Core work hours are generally Monday through Friday. Flexibility may be required to spend time on the manufacturing floor across shifts and to support quality investigations, production issues, trials, or other manufacturing activities outside normal working hours.
