The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.
Position Summary:
The Learning and Development (L&D) Manager will lead the Learning and Development function for India, partnering closely with HR Managers and business leaders across Manufacturing, Technology, Shared Services, Digital & IT, and Commercial domains. This role is responsible for integrating Corning’s global leadership development programs, online learning resources, and designing India-specific programs to meet the unique needs of the local workforce.
The incumbent will play a significant role in improving productivity, succession readiness, and building organizational capability to ensure future business success.
Additionally, this position will provide strategic L&D support to joint ventures and contract manufacturing sites in India, promoting a culture of continuous learning and skill development across diverse industries, including telecom, automotive, life sciences, and consumer electronics.
Position Responsibilities
L&D Manager-India is responsible for designing and delivering all training and workforce development solutions for various businesses in India. Develop to ensure that all employees are trained and ready to perform against the stated performance expectations for each role/job classification.
- Strategic Leadership:
- Develop and execute comprehensive Learning and Development strategies aligned with Corning’s business goals and organizational growth objectives.
- Lead initiatives to make the organization future-ready, focusing on enhancing productivity and succession readiness.
- Promote the use of technology and AI in learning processes to deliver innovative and scalable learning solutions.
- Stakeholder Collaboration:
- Partner with HR Managers and business leaders across Manufacturing, Technology, Shared Services, Digital & IT, and Commercial domains to identify and address talent development needs.
- Work closely with joint venture and contract manufacturing sites to provide tailored L&D support.
- Program Design and Delivery:
- Leads the needs assessment and definition of training requirements for all roles for India including but not limited to: supervisors/leaders of people, production operators, engineers, and technicians
- Leads the design, preparation, and delivery of training and development for all employees. Key programs includes:
- Overall New Employee Orientation (NEO) and onboarding effectiveness and job readiness.
- First line supervisory and management development training
- Technical training (e.g., manufacturing processes, engineering curriculum, etc.)
- Operator and Technician job skills training and certification process
- Workforce effectiveness training, such as interpersonal skills and communication skills
- Lead flagship leadership development programs, including:
- Corning International Leadership Development Program (CILDP) for senior managers.
- Next Generation Leadership Development Program (NGL) for mid-level managers and supervisors.
- Coaching and mentoring initiatives to build leadership capabilities across multiple levels.
- Manage technical certifications and upskilling programs for manufacturing, technology, and commercial teams in India.
- Integrate Corning’s global leadership development programs and online learning resources with locally designed initiatives to ensure comprehensive talent development.
- Promoting Technology in Learning:
- Drive the adoption of innovative learning technologies, including AI-based solutions, online platforms, and virtual training methods, to enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of learning programs.
- Talent Development:
- Ensure employees across functions and levels have access to development opportunities that prepare them for future roles.
- Implement evaluation methods for ongoing improvement in training effectiveness.
- Partners with direct supervisors to ensure that every employee has a training / integration plan, that the plan is executed on time, that the effectiveness of the plan is measured, and any remediation or follow-up actions are defined and implemented accordingly.
- Culture Development:
- Work with HR and business leaders to design initiatives that promote a positive organizational culture aligned with Corning values.
- Partners with HR and business leaders to design, implement, and monitor the effectiveness of an overall “culture” plan.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Conduct ongoing training needs analysis and deliver real-time, innovative solutions to address talent gaps.
- Ensure continuous improvement of learning systems and programs to meet evolving business requirements.
- Successfully deliver requirements of ISO/QMS and other audit requirements like global Achieving manufacturing excellence (AME) assessment.
- Best Practice Sharing:
- Collaborate with global and corporate teams to align on best practices and ensure their implementation across divisions.
Minimum Requirements:
- Educational Background:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering is required.
- MBA in HR or Diploma in Training & Development from ISTD is preferred.
- Experience:
- 12-15 years of experience in Learning and Development roles within Multi-National Companies (MNC)s.
- Proven expertise in designing and delivering impactful training initiatives, including leadership development programs.
- Experience managing complex projects across multiple stakeholder groups in matrix organizations.
- Key Skills:
- Strong communication skills (verbal, written, presentation).
- Excellent project management and organizational skills.
- Strategic thinking with the ability to balance short and long-term goals.
- Strong influencing and collaboration skills to manage diverse stakeholder priorities.
- Applied experience in Six Sigma, Lean, or Kaizen (preferred).
