Job Profile:
This position is for a “Research Scientist – Fluid and Thermal” who can use engineering knowledge and fundamental understanding to solve problems using modeling & simulation. We are looking for technically well versed, out-of-the-box thinker who can work independently and collaborate effectively with the project team to deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions for Corning products & processes. Candidate needs to apply numerical methods to understand physics, study design options and generate new concepts for different Corning businesses. This position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with globally located project leaders, experimentalists, modelers, researchers, engineers in our commercial organizations, and customers.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Candidate will develop, validate, and apply analytical & numerical models to solve problems related to manufacturing processes & product performance.
- Participate on cross functional teams to solve research and development problems and deliver practical solutions to high-value business programs in research, technology, and engineering.
- Develop models using appropriate methods and software; expanding the capabilities as needed.
- Communicate and present regular project updates to the stakeholders located across the globe. This will require the candidate to be available for evening / late evening meetings (India time).
- Document findings with internal and external publications.
- Keep abreast with the technological advancements.
Required Skills:
- In-depth understanding of fluid dynamics, heat & mass transfer, transport phenomenon, numerical and computational techniques, reacting flows.
- Experience with commercial / open-source softwares such as FLUENT, Polyflow, Ansys-Thermal, OpenFOAM, COMSOL, SpaceClaim, ANSYS Meshing platform, MATLAB, and Tecplot.
- Excellent analytical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
- Very good communication skills and good ability to interact with team members and customers.
- Ability to understand and break down real world problems into solvable modeling objectives.
- Good balance between technical depth and breadth (i.e., flexible, and adaptable to multiple technology areas).
- Self-motivated, interested in long term technical growth.
Desired Skills:
- Experience with experimental work, directly or in a collaboration.
- Flexibility to work in a dynamic work environment & on diverse technologies.
- Experience in multiple software and/or programming languages (C/C++, Unix, Shell, Python, Excel-VBA) will be an added advantage.
- Exposure to polymer processing / viscoelastic flow / combustion modeling will be a plus.

- High level of technical curiosity, maintain a desire to learn and grow in diverse technology areas.
- Must be collaborative and able to openly engage with colleagues to achieve project goals.
- The ability to translate difficult technical concepts to broader audience.
- Self-motivated with an ability to manage one’s own work independently.
- Ability to communicate effectively by phone and video with team members at international locations.
Education and Experience:
- Masters / Dual Degree / PhD in Mechanical (Thermal & Fluids), Chemical or Aerospace Engineering from IITs / IISc / reputed foreign universities.
- Fresher or relevant work experience of 1-3 years after Masters / Dual Degree or more than 1 year after PhD.
Travel:
Occasional travel to global locations to interact with people in the research development, engineering and manufacturing community.
