Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
Provides high level technical and analytical expertise for driving to root cause in solving chronic issues and overcoming significant technological hurdles. Identifies and drives breakthrough process, product and/or technology improvements leading to major financial impact and/or competitive advantage. Develops new process technology and fundamental understanding in support of division/company priorities; Proactive in the propagation of engineering principles and practices across the company. Develops and implement new products and/or processes/ technologies to support company priorities. Technology gatekeeper - monitors, communicates, and sanctions best practices and consistent application of technology - "the final word" on technical matters in field(s) of expertise
Key Responsibilities
- Provides high level problem solving capabilities for complex and broad ranging problems
- Coach/mentor/develop mid/senior level engineers
- Develop and protect fundamental knowledge with broad application
- Manage and motivate diverse project teams across multiple functions
- Broadly applies creativity and state of the art knowledge to identify, develop, and deliver robust, capable, competitively advantaged processes and products
- Develop and leads many areas of the manufacturing and/or technology roadmap. Ensures all equipment and processes are documented, protects and provides step- change Intellectual Property improvement value-add
- Requires use of statistical data analysis and DOE in major decisions, process problem solving and process/product improvement
- Develop and execute project plans for large, complex, and high impact technical initiatives
- Identify opportunities and lead efforts for process simplification, i.e. step removal
- Sets example and creates culture of safety and environmental responsibility
- Key contributor in division/company technical strategy development
- Build/maintain extensive technical network both within and outside of the company
- Champion innovation and risk taking
- Develop and sell vision to senior division/company leaders
Experiences/Education - Required
- Bachelor of Science (Engineering or applied science)
- Statistical training through Design of Experiments (DOE)
- Lean Fundamentals
- Lead teams with clear and significant, demonstrable financial impact.
- Demonstrated ability to permanently solve difficult manufacturing issues (crises or chronic issues)
- Lead new process/ product/ innovation project(s)
- Knowledge sharing across division and company - e.g. core technologist
- Basic understanding of manufacturing cost accounting and drivers
- Submission and approval of significant IP
- Experience working with mentor(s) with technical expertise in different technical areas
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Advanced degree in Engineering or applied science
- Black Belt certification
- Plant experience
- Experience across multiple divisions, functions
