Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.




Automation Engineer


Purpose of Position:

Apply Mechanical, Electrical, Automation skills and knowledge to supporting, designing and improve equipment solutions for OCS manufacturing.   Drive toward world class performance of automation and establishing standardized equipment operation and documentation practices.


Major Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Equipment design, deployment, industrialization and engineering support strategies for OCS manufacturing technologies.   Improvement of equipment quality and capability to ensure long term manufacturing performance, including:
    • Equipment design and programming documented to enable site support and flexibility.
    • Identification of Critical equipment spares, programming and service procedures.
    • Application of engineering Troubleshooting knowledge and methods.
  2. Initial focus of work will be on equipment deployment, installation, and successful transition into manufacturing operation at multiple global sites.    
  3. Support the development and proliferation of new manufacturing technologies and deliver improved equipment capabilities for manufacturing.
  4. Provide equipment design, documentation, programming, and prototyping capabilities in support of projects.
  5. Support manufacturing equipment transfers and new equipment procurement, installation and startup as driven by business needs.
  6. Project Management
  7. Create Appropriations Requests (ARs) to fund projects.
  8. Manage project spending to stay within budget.
  9. Create and support the establishment of a safe work environment.

Personnel Directed

  1. No direct reports.
  2. Engineers may direct supplier / vendor personnel as well as site technicians, project team members through matrixed project organization to achieve equipment installation, startup, and performance improvement goals.

Minimum Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Engineering Degree or higher in Engineering discipline
  • Hands on mechanical, controls or programming experience with new equipment technologies.
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering business results.
  • Effective technical organizational and planning skills, with ability to handle changing priorities
  • Excellent communications, interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Must be a self-starter, able to work in team environment and motivate others


  • Experience supporting capital equipment design, procurement, installation and support, especially for automation projects / equipment
  • Working knowledge of OCS / CCS manufacturing products and processes
  • Three to Five years total manufacturing engineering experience with key experiences in equipment development, build, manufacturing startup and capability improvement
