Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
Provides high level technical and analytical expertise for solving chronic issues and overcoming significant technological hurdles. Identifies and drives step change improvements for cost, quality, and capacity. Extends basic process technology / fundamental understanding in support of unit/division business needs. Develops and implement new enabling processes/ technologies to support unit or division priorities. Technology gatekeeper - monitors, communicates, and sanctions best practices and consistent application of technology
Key Responsibilities
- Provides high level problem solving capabilities
- Coach/mentor/develop junior/mid level engineers
- Develop and protect fundamental knowledge and IP
- Manage and motivate diverse project teams
- Develop and deliver robust, capable materials, processes and equipment - implements needed step change improvements
- Develop and leads several areas of the manufacturing and/or technology roadmap. Ensures all equipment and processes are documented, protects and is a SME to Intellectual Property improvements
- Leads project teams in use of statistical tools and DOE for process problem solving and process/product improvement
- Develop and execute project plans for large, complex, and high impact technical initiatives
- Identify opportunities and lead efforts for process simplification, i.e. step removal
- Sets example and creates culture of safety and environmental responsibility
- Key contributor in unit/division technical strategy development
- Build/maintain extensive technical network
- Champion innovation and risk taking
- Develop and sell vision to unit/division leaders
Experiences/Education - Required
- Bachelor of Science (Engineering or applied science)
- Statistical training through Design of Experiments (DOE)
- Lean Fundamentals
- Lead teams with clear and significant, demonstrable financial impact
- Demonstrated ability to permanently solve difficult manufacturing issues (crises or chronic)
- Lead new process/ product/ innovation project(s)
- Knowledge sharing across division - e.g. core technologist
- Basic understanding of manufacturing cost accounting and drivers
- Submits and is granted IP
- Experience working with mentor(s) with technical expertise in different technical areas
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Advanced degree in Engineering or applied science
- Black Belt certification
- Plant experience
- Experience across multiple divisions, functions
- Global experience
