Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
The Process Engineering Manager is responsible for governing and continuously improving the global processes and process engineering capability across the region and aligning with other regions across OCS. This role provides strategic leadership to ensure process capability, cost competitiveness, and risk reduction across the core processes, while aligning process engineering priorities with divisional and business strategy. This leadership position will manage engineering talent supporting global process disciplines and plant initiatives and corporate business directives. He or she will review process changes to ensure global consistency and monitor global performance. This will be done through development of deep knowledge on why the process works, process capability, performance, and control methodology.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct Process Engineers activity in support of process capability advancement and improvement projects. The project responsibility will include reporting and improving project schedules based on the organization targets. This includes managing engineers to ensure project tracker and project structure folders are followed, maintained and current.
- Work closely with leadership at the plants to ensure alignment of resources and support.
- Manage and communicate overall project status and schedule updates.
- Identify and drive process improvement opportunities for core processes.
- Ensure the documentation and standard practices are valued, maintained and practiced.
- Own manufacturing process governance
- Identify global process trends and variations through systematic process monitoring & data analysis
- Provide oversight and guidance for second level manufacturing troubleshooting based on engineering principles and process understanding
- Ensure consistent evaluation of processes changes through structured experimental plans, statistical data analysis, qualification and change control
Experiences/Education - Required
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent
- 10-15 years experience in plant engineering or an engineering support role to a manufacturing operation
- Strong communication skills and comfortable presenting information
- Project management skills (planning, resource management, conflict resolution, able to meet deadlines)
- Excellent organization
- Bilingual (English/Spanish), English skills > 80%
- Ability to engage with shop floor personnel and with plant leadership
- Understanding of Process Control and Process Discipline tools
- Green Belt Certification or 6-Sigma Equivalent
- Project leadership skills, including multi-cultural teams
- Able to communicate through remote means (conference calls, email, IM)
- Demonstrated strategic thinking
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Ability to motivate individuals and manage situationally, good coaching and mentoring skills
- High initiative, able to work with minimal direction
- Prior experience managing an engineering team
- Understand and practice Corning’s Leadership Model
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing practices
