Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

As a Engineering Project Manager, you will lead low- to medium-complexity product development and manufacturing projects, with an initial focus on New Product Introduction initiatives supporting HSDC. You will coordinate engineering, operations, manufacturing, product development, and other stakeholders to deliver projects safely, on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. You will also help evaluate project value, manage risk, and ensure alignment with business and customer needs. The role may include leading cost-reduction initiatives based on business priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage project plans, including scope, milestones, resources, budgets, risks, and business objectives; monitor progress and recommend adjustments when needed.
  • Lead cross-functional teams through product and process development, testing, evaluation, manufacturing implementation, and project launch.
  • Engage customers and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle to clarify requirements, manage expectations, communicate progress, and resolve issues.
  • Build and maintain strong business cases by evaluating market needs, technical and manufacturing opportunities, cost targets, project risks, and expected financial impact.
  • Ensure project activities meet applicable safety, quality, delivery, intellectual property, and compliance expectations while using effective project management and continuous improvement practices.

Travel: Up to 25%, depending on project needs, including occasional international travel.

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences, or another relevant technical discipline.
  • At least three years of experience leading projects in a manufacturing, engineering, or industrial environment.
  • Experience managing New Product Introduction, product development, process development, equipment, automation, or comparable technical projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams involving engineering, technology, operations, manufacturing, and business stakeholders.
  • Experience developing project plans and managing scope, schedules, budgets, resources, risks, and project communications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at multiple organizational levels and build productive relationships across functions.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the practical judgment and initiative to move projects forward in a changing environment.

 

Additional experience that will help you stand out

  • Experience in optics, optical communications, or another advanced technology environment.
  • Graduate degree such as an MBA or master’s degree in a technical or business discipline.
  • Experience leading cost-reduction projects, cost modeling, or business-case validation.
  • Experience with automation, manufacturing equipment, or factory implementation projects.
  • Familiarity with product and process development methodologies, Critical Chain project management, Performance Excellence tools, or similar approaches.
  • Strong technical curiosity and the ability to ask insightful questions, evaluate options, and guide teams toward effective solutions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Project.
