Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
As a Engineering Project Manager, you will lead process improvement, equipment design, and automation projects from initial opportunity identification through implementation and manufacturing acceptance. You will translate business priorities into practical engineering solutions that improve productivity, safety, quality, cost, reliability, and performance. Working with teams across engineering, manufacturing, operations, maintenance, quality, safety, suppliers, and contractors, you will guide projects through design, prototyping, installation, startup, validation, and sustained results.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, prioritize, and define manufacturing productivity opportunities, developing project objectives, business cases, budgets, schedules, resource plans, success measures, and implementation strategies.
- Lead cross-functional and cross-site teams through problem definition, root-cause analysis, concept development, technical evaluation, design reviews, risk assessments, prototyping, testing, and solution selection.
- Provide technical leadership for process improvements, mechanical and equipment design, tooling, automation, installation, commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, validation, and manufacturing acceptance on live production lines.
- Manage project scope, cost, schedule, resources, risks, changes, suppliers, and technical deliverables while communicating progress, value, risks, decisions, and resource needs to stakeholders and leadership.
- Track project performance against approved business cases and drive actions to achieve and sustain productivity improvements.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Mechatronic, Electrical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- At least 10 years of project management or project leadership experience involving manufacturing process, equipment, productivity, or improvement initiatives.
- At least 5 years of experience leading projects implemented in a manufacturing environment.
- Proven experience managing projects from opportunity definition and concept development through equipment or process implementation.
- Strong experience managing project scope, budgets, schedules, resources, risks, stakeholders, suppliers, and technical deliverables.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross functional technical teams and influence stakeholders without direct authority.
- Strong process engineering, mechanical design, equipment development, technical problem solving, communication, and decision making skills.
- Ability to balance technical rigor, manufacturing practicality, project urgency, safety, and business value.
- Willingness to travel up to 25%, including travel to domestic and international manufacturing locations and suppliers.
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Experience with equipment, automation, process-improvement, productivity, cost reduction, value engineering, or manufacturing transformation projects.
- Experience leading multi-site or global engineering initiatives.
- Experience developing cost models, business cases, or return on investment analyses.
- Advanced technical degree, MBA, project management training, or relevant certification.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project-planning tools.
- Organized, collaborative, self-directed, creative, and action-oriented approach.
