Role Purpose
The purpose of this position is to lead, guide, and support the resolution of complex fixture, equipment, and process design challenges through effective technical leadership and supervision. This role is responsible for planning, prioritizing, and overseeing engineering activities that drive process quality improvement initiatives across OCS locations. The Supervisor provides technical direction to fixture and equipment design engineers, ensures alignment with business and manufacturing objectives, and promotes best practices in design, safety, and standardization.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and personally execute the development of complex mechanical solutions and process changes to control, reduce, and eliminate manufacturing and NPI issues, while guiding engineers on less complex designs.
- Perform and oversee conceptual and detailed design of machines, fixtures, tools, and systems using 3D CAD and simulation tools; directly own high‑risk, high‑complexity, or novel design efforts.
- Provide technical leadership within cross‑functional project teams, driving resolution of difficult mechanical and process engineering challenges while ensuring clear understanding of project objectives, constraints, and manufacturing impact.
- Serve as the primary engineering escalation point for production support, delivering hands‑on problem solving for critical manufacturing issues and ensuring timely, sustainable solutions.
- Lead and participate in data‑driven problem solving, including experimentation, root cause analysis, and collaboration with subject matter experts to resolve complex process and equipment issues.
- Provide deep engineering expertise and mentorship to establish fundamental understanding of manufacturing processes, design intent, and failure modes within the team.
- Ensure the development, accuracy, and maintenance of engineering and operations documentation, including design standards, work instructions, and best practices.
- Interface with and technically guide external suppliers, including specification, evaluation, and procurement of precision components, fixtures, and equipment; ensure supplier designs meet technical, quality, and schedule requirements.
- Ensure all designs and solutions meet customer requirements, internal standards, safety regulations, and quality expectations, while balancing cost, timing, and manufacturability.
- Oversee and personally perform detailing of mechanical parts and assemblies, including drawing creation, review, approval, and lifecycle management for new and existing fixtures, tooling, and equipment.
- Plan, coordinate, and actively participate in the training of engineers, technicians, and production associates on newly deployed equipment and processes, ensuring smooth handoff and long‑term process ownership.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Advanced expertise in mechanical and machine design, including materials, fabrication methods, assembly and joining techniques, GD&T, and tolerance stack‑up analysis, with the ability to review, approve, and personally execute complex designs.
- Strong experience designing equipment and automated systems using motors, drives, bearings, actuators, motion systems, part‑handling, conveyance, linkages, and pneumatics, including system‑level decision making.
- High proficiency in engineering fundamentals and 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks, CREO preferred), enabling robust, manufacturable designs and effective technical oversight.
- Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple designs and technical challenges simultaneously, balancing hands‑on execution with supervisory responsibilities.
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Demonstrated innovative and technically curious mindset, driving continuous improvement and adoption of effective technologies and design practices.
- Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making capability, able to evaluate multiple alternatives and recommend optimal solutions within plant and business guidelines.
- Highly results‑oriented and entrepreneurial, accountable for design quality, performance, cost, and delivery.
