Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

Collaborates with other team members to solve technical and engineering challenges related to testing equipment and computer systems. Support or lead continuous improvement activities, new testing equipment or process implementations, and cost reduction projects. Contributes to the development and execution of plans to evaluate new technologies or improvements in existing technologies, resulting in superior products in terms of quality and/or cost. Focuses specifically on ensuring the optimal performance of testing equipment and computer systems through diagnostics, preventive and corrective maintenance, and hardware/software optimization. Understands Corning's intellectual property management processes and follows those processes when documenting intellectual property developed during projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides day-to-day technical support: Troubleshoots issues related to testing equipment, computer systems, and associated technologies to ensure the ongoing functionality of production, development, and research operations.
  • Trains personnel: Provides training to operators and technicians on the use, maintenance, and optimization of testing equipment and computer systems, including new processes and technologies.
  • Develops detailed technical understanding: Uses rigorous processes and technical knowledge to build a deep understanding of critical steps in the operation and maintenance of testing equipment.
  • Participates in projects: Serves as a team member or leader on projects focused on improving testing equipment, computer systems, and related processes.
  • Diagnoses technical issues: Identifies and resolves material, process, and equipment problems, determines root causes, and implements corrective actions related to testing and computer systems.
  • Implements technological changes: Documents and implements changes in equipment, processes, and computer systems to improve performance and reliability.
  • Uses statistical tools: Applies basic and advanced statistical tools, including Design of Experiments (DOE), to solve problems related to testing equipment and improve processes and products.
  • Ensures quality and consistency: Guarantees the quality and repeatability of processes and products associated with testing and computer systems.
  • Supports new product introductions: Assists with equipment installation, process certification, documentation, and training for testing equipment and computer systems related to new products.
  • Complies with safety standards: Ensures the safety of operators and equipment while complying with environmental and safety regulations.
  • Develops specialized knowledge: Builds expertise in testing equipment and computer systems within specific areas of manufacturing or engineering.
  • Executes improvement projects: Leads cost reduction and process improvement (DMAIC) projects aligned with business objectives, particularly those related to testing equipment and computer systems.

Experiences/Education - Required

Education.

  • Bachelor of Science or Engineering Degree or higher in relevant discipline
  • Master’s degree a plus
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)

 

Work Experience.

  • 3+ years of experience in the maintenance, operation, and optimization of testing equipment and computer systems.
  • Knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and automation systems related to testing equipment.

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • Familiarity with maintenance management software such as MAXIMO.
  • Ability to read and interpret electronic diagrams and technical schematics related to testing equipment.
  • Experience with industrial vision systems
  • Strong people management skills, including the ability to coordinate technical teams and train personnel in the use and maintenance of testing equipment and computer systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills is required (methodological approach)
  • Statistical training with experience applying concepts such as Process Capability and Measurement System Analysis
  • Professional knowledge of MS Office (particularly MS Excel software, MS Word, SPC XL desired, Visual Basic a plus)
  • Business Financials knowledge
