Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

The measurements organization provides measurement solutions to Corning’s Optical Connectivity business to deliver best in class products to our customers.  This position requires knowledge in fiber optics manufacturing process to provide technical leadership and support to Corning product testing and inspection processes across different regions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with experienced professionals across a variety of functional groups (manufacturing, development engineering, New Product Introduction team, IT, etc.) to develop and implement precision measurement methods and optical fiber inspection systems, for emerging products.
  • Provide support to manufacturing engineering and operations teams for both new products, including system troubleshooting and root cause analysis on product integrity/performance opportunities.
  • Develop and apply measurement uncertainty / measurement system analysis / gage R&R techniques to ensure proper measurement system application and capability.
  • Design experiments and analyze data to identify and implement measurement integrity and efficiency improvements to measurement systems for fiber optical assemblies, prototype and volume manufacturing.
  • Lead and develop new solutions for measurement capabilities, covering voice of customer from different organizations.
  • Update and communicate Discovery and Development roadmaps for emerging technologies.
  • Develop and manage documentation in support of measurement system deployments including machine specifications, operating procedures, and drawing packages.
  • Train plant engineering, maintenance and operation associates on use and maintenance of measurement systems.
  • Management of execution of short term and long-term solutions.
  • Leverage external suppliers with key technologies or systems integration expertise to develop, procure, build, and install test equipment for new products.
  • Visibly support the establishment and maintenance of a safe work environment.

Experiences/Education - Required

  • BS in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or Mechatronics.
  • 0-2 years of work experience in measurement engineering, process engineering, or related area.

  • Strong initiative.
  • Strong soft skills to work under pressure and release solutions in a short period of time.
  • Experience on Core Tools focus on SPC tooling.
  • Experience with FMEA, PFMEA or Causal tree analysis applications, comparative methods and design of experiments tools.
  • Experience with Measurement Uncertainty Analysis, Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (GR&R), and/or Measurement System Analysis (MSA).
  • Work effectively in technical project teams in both leadership and team member roles.
  • Comfortable generating and delivering updates to leadership on a routine basis.
  • Experience using CAD software for generation of mechanical assemblies and drawings, optical and electrical schematics, and general design layouts.
  • Strong English and Spanish written and verbal communication skills.
  • General computer and networking knowledge.
  • Accountable for actions/behaviors.

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • Understanding of manufacturing principals and experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Machine Vision system development for manufacturing inspection applications (optics, lighting, cameras, image acquisition, and basic knowledge of image processing algorithms).
  • Working and demonstrated applied knowledge of fiber optic cable assembly measurement equipment related but not limited to: optical attenuation, reflectometry, surface profile interferometry, and video microscopy (end-face inspection).
