Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Measurements Engineer

 

Scope of Position:

 

This position requires knowledge in fiber optics manufacturing processes to provide technical leadership and support to engineering groups, needs strong technical curiosity across many technologies, and the ability to learn and desire to work with others for the progress of the business. As part of a global team, this position provides measurement solutions to Corning’s Optical Connectivity business to deliver best in class products to our customers.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

 

  • Work closely with experienced professionals across a variety of functional groups (manufacturing, development engineering, IT, etc.) to define, develop and implement measurement methods and optical fiber inspection systems.
  • Provide global expert-level support to manufacturing engineering and operations teams to ensure efficient and reliable manufacturing operations for current or new products, advice on equipment troubleshooting and repair, identify root cause of failures and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop and apply measurement uncertainty / measurement system analysis techniques to ensure proper measurement system application and capability.
  • Design experiments and analyze data to identify and implement measurement integrity and efficiency improvements to measurement systems for fiber optical assemblies, prototype and volume manufacturing.
  • Lead or participate in projects for cost reduction, process improvements to address measurement cycle time reduction, measurement uncertainty (improving quality and yield issues) or equipment cost/availability.
  • Transfer measurement technology from other location/region or in early stage development to a system ready for use in a manufacturing environment.
  • Develop and manage documentation in support of measurement system deployments including machine specifications, operating procedures, and drawing packages.
  • Train plant engineering, maintenance and operation associates on use and maintenance of measurement systems.
  • Management of execution of short term and long term solutions.
  • Leverage external suppliers with key technologies or systems integration expertise to develop, procure, build, and install test equipment for capacity expansion needs.
  • Visibly support the establishment and maintenance of a safe work environment.

 

Required Education, Years and Area of Experience:

 

- BS in Optical Science / Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Mechatronics.

- 3+ years of work experience in measurement engineering, process engineering, visual inspection automation or related area.

  • MS or PhD in Optics Sciences, Metrology or similar would be considered as a substitute for years of experience.

 

Required Skills:

 

  • Strong project management skills to be able to manage multiple projects and tasks in parallel.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, able to independently define hypothesis and problem statements.
  • Experience with FMEA, PFMEA or Causal tree analysis applications and use of SPC, comparative methods and design of experiments tools.
  • Demonstrated excellence in science and engineering fundamentals, including demonstrated application of the scientific method, Lean methodologies, and DMAIC tools.
  • Experience with Measurement Uncertainty Analysis, Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (GR&R), and/or Measurement System Analysis (MSA).
  • Able to make data-driven decisions by blending analytical thinking, practical judgment, and available data.
  • Strong initiative and self-motivated.
  • Work effectively in technical project teams in both leadership and team member roles.
  • Comfortable generating and delivering updates to leadership on a routine basis.
  • Experience using CAD software for generation of mechanical assemblies and drawings, optical and electrical schematics, and general design layouts.
  • Strong English and Spanish written and verbal communication skills.
  • General computer and networking knowledge.
  • Accountable for actions/behaviors.
     

Desired Skills:

 

  • Scientific curiosity and an inventive spirit.
  • Understanding of manufacturing principals and experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated application of measurement science in the fields of fiber optics, surface profiling interferometry, microscopy, optical refractometry and/or other optical or physical measurement disciplines.
  • Machine Vision system development for manufacturing inspection applications (optics, lighting, cameras, image acquisition, and basic knowledge of image processing algorithms).
  • Working and demonstrated applied knowledge of fiber optic cable assembly measurement equipment related but not limited to: optical attenuation, reflectometry, surface profile interferometry, and video microscopy (end-face inspection).
  • Experience with computer-based measurement or automation equipment, design, setup, support and data systems architecture.
  • Demonstrated use of advance software for modeling and/or statistical analysis (e.g. MatLab and ZMax).
  • General SQL knowledge.
  • Experience in development of automated solutions to improve process controls (Including PLC programming).
  • Basic knowledge and application of computer programming language (Labview &/or Visual NET).
  • Knowledge in mechanical of fluids.
  • Basic experience with instrument cycle time studies.
     

 

Travel Requirements:

0-10% travel domestic and international (Mexico, USA, Brazil, Poland, France, China, Taiwan)
