Molding Development Engineer

 

Overview

Corning Mold Development Engineering is searching for a highly capable and experienced Mold Development Project Leader to procure and qualify plastic injection molds. The ideal candidate will have many years of mold making, mold design, or mold procurement experience with a desire to continue in this field in a challenging and diverse environment. Molds range from simple prototype to high end and complex SPI Class 101 production molds. We are a high performing team that nurtures a collaborative team working environment. We are not looking for someone who knows what a mold is, but rather someone with strong passion, talent, and experience in this specific field.

 

Scope of Position

• Project management and technical expertise for new mold procurement projects across the division

• Create RFQ packages to be used by the vendors for quoting purposes and select vendors based on total cost of ownership and alignment of supplier capabilities to specific tool complexity

• Work with the supplier to develop and approve the mold design.

• Collaborate with various internal and external teams as necessary to test, qualify, and release molds of varying complexity and intricacy into multiple Corning manufacturing sites

• Typical mold solutions include prototype, SPI Class 103, and SPI Class 101 plastic injection molds

 

Major Roles and Responsibilities Day-to-Day:

 

Concept Development:

o Provide design for manufacturing (DFM) analysis for new product designs

o Create budgetary funding and capacity utilization estimates for new mold projects

o Submit purchase requisitions

o Evaluate final part designs and determine the most cost-effective mold design relative to manufacturing efficiency, long-term tool durability, and simplicity of tool maintenance while following Corning global standards.

o Support the mold design process by providing mold design direction for vendors as they complete the full CAD package for mold designs, analyzing and providing feedback on design iterations, and fully approving mold designs before mold fabrication

 

Fabrication and Project Management:

o Initiate and sustain project documentation throughout the mold development process utilizing existing department procedures and documentation

o Ensure proposed tooling solutions meet total product life requirements, optimize cavitation, meet or exceed cycle time targets, and minimize material usage

o Interface with and manage mold vendors during all stages of the mold development process

 

Qualification and New Mold On-boarding:

o Oversee T-1 sampling of new molds and analyze performance against expectations

o Ensure process recipe is created and documented using scientific molding principles to ensure long term production performance, sustainability, and stability

o Initiate first article inspection process and ensure the mold’s performance meets engineering specifications

o Provide direction and support for mold qualification and transfer to manufacturing across multiple sites

Skill and Knowledge Requirements

 

Desired Education / Certification:

• BS in Mechanical or Plastics Engineering or equivalent preferred

• Mold Making or Mold Design apprenticeship certification

• Candidates with strong mold making or mold design backgrounds without a 4-year degree or other certifications may be considered on a case by case basis

 

Work Experience Requirements:

• 5+ years of in depth daily work and knowledge of injection mold tooling

 

Required Skills:

• Strong project management capability

• Detailed knowledge of all types of injection mold tooling

• Thorough knowledge of secondary assembly and decorating processes

• Ability to utilize all MS Office applications

• Knowledge of tool steels and metallurgical properties

• Fundamental understanding of injection mold processing parameters and applications (cause and affect)

• Effective verbal and written communication

• Ability to lead or participate in cross-functional teams

• Functional with 3D CAD software

• Ability to travel (domestic and international)

• Technical English language skills (written & spoken)
