Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

Develop new manufacturing processes, technologies and methods while improving existing manufacturing processes and capabilities to reach the required CPK/SIGMA levels controlling process scrap and product cost.

Assure CSC Compliance through the proper process documentation, enforce standardization and findings follow up

Facilitate and delivered robust well documented data driven RCA with the use of methodology

Key Responsibilities

  • Individual contributor lead or team member with ownership of a significant part of the accomplishment within Business Unit/Area, Plant, Division, Function, Region.
  • Manage complex scope, many variables and stakeholders across multiple functions/divisions/countries.
  • Coach Bands B, A, CC, BB, AA
  • Plan, organize and execute work-streams on projects to deliver process improvement and step change capabilities
  • Evaluation process cost, quality, and capability alternatives, institutes continuous improvements to existing manufacturing operations through process automation/semi-automation
  • Project work scope typically includes equipment selection (design, development) manufacturing installation, start-up and acceptance (Pilot, Pre-Pro Runs & EEM)
  • Role includes individual contributor and project work-stream leadership responsibilities
  • Develop and update manufacturing process documentation, (MPIs, VAs, PM/AC along with Maintenance Department)
  • Work with and facilitate alignment between manufacturing, development and upstream process experts to deliver step change and improvement of finishing technology capabilities
  • Manage internal Corning resources to complete project deliverables
  • Interface with external machine builders, system integrators, and suppliers to specify and deliver fully integrated process machine systems on-time, on-budget and fulfilling the technical scope when is appropriated
  • Apply knowledge of engineering principles and methods to resolve challenges
  • Utilize statistical tools, engineering data, and DMAIC/DESGN/Lean/MEE/TRIZ methodologies to develop process and fundamental understanding to support robust manufacturing processes.
  • Support development and execution of finishing technology strategy, roadmap and project portfolio
  • Elaborate product and process improvement qualification plans.  Complete technical reports for internal publication
  • Support problem-solving in manufacturing, including root cause identification and resolution
  • Apply process engineering knowledge, skills and expertise from concept through delivery of process and equipment at production areas
  • Participate in Stage Gate (RA, LA, GA) defined.
  • Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • Participate in solutions related to process issues on Customer Notifications
  • Introduce safe and ergonomic devices and processes to enable a safe work environment
  • Lead and/or support the implementation of a robust Product Quality Architecture for new and existing products
  • Propose and implement iKaizen and Safety iKaizen (ergonomic devices and processes) to enable a safe work environment; support and perform 5S implementation in work area to achieve Plant goal
  • Define substitute consumables to avoid an adverse process impact
  • Support Global Standardization processes/projects
  • Knowledge of product application on the field to identify process improvement opportunities

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Bachelor of Science or Engineering Degree or higher in relevant discipline, Master’s degree a plus
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)
  • 5 years required, 3 years desired of experience as Engineer in Process/Manufacturing, Quality,  NPI or Product Engineering in a multi-product manufacturing environment using Statistical Process Control or/ and Quality Control & Risk Assessment.

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • DMAIC Green Belt certified, DMAIC Black Belt certification desired, PQA Green Belt experience a plus
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing Process Control (Error-Proofing method application and Statistical Process Control recommended, Customer complaint resolution a plus, Quality Management Systems utilization a plus, etc.)
  • Demonstrated track record of Quality and Process improvement projects using Six Sigma, DMAIC, or equivalent process improvement methodology
  • Strong problem-solving skills is required (methodological approach)
  • Statistical training with experience applying concepts such as Process Capability and Measurement System Analysis, DOE’s, Linear Regressions , Sample Size Calculation ,  etc
  • Professional knowledge of MS Office (particularly MS Excel software, MS Word, SPC XL desired, Visual Basic a plus)
  • Knowledge of Minitab, SPC or equivalent statistical software is required
  • Demonstrated Project Management experience
    • Ability to manage and participate in both short- and long-term projects
  • Business Financials knowledge
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills required
  • Must be a self-starter , coach , able to work in a team environment and motivate others, while being capable of working independently in a dynamic, business/manufacturing environment.
