Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

Lead the development, optimization, and technical control of polymer extrusion processes, ensuring operational efficiency, product quality, and continuous improvement through strategic use of materials knowledge, process technology, and technical leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership in problem solving, and technical expertise, to ensure timely resolution of short-term process and equipment issues, and higher level troubleshooting
  • Provides direction to other technicians / engineers, coaches junior engineers, and provides guidance to maintenance personnel
  • Provides general engineering and manufacturing skills and knowledge (understands theories and fundamentals), and capable of leading projects to get to root cause of issues, and put permanent solutions in place
  • Provides disciplined project leadership across multiple stages of innovation for new product, process, cost reduction and capacity improvement initiatives
  • Recommends and implements permanent solutions to long term performance issues, and improves existing and new technologies and processes
  • Develops and leads some areas of the manufacturing and/or technical roadmap. Documents material, process and/or equipment to protect and contribute to Intellectual Property improvements
  • Proficient in use of statistical data analysis and DOE in process problem solving and process/product improvement
  • Identifies, justifies, and implements cost reduction, capacity enhancement, capital equipment and other improvement initiatives
  • Introduces new products and technologies
  • Meets all Environmental, Safety and Health requirements
  • Develops SME knowledge of material, process and/or equipment in focused areas of manufacturing or engineering
  • Tracks the effectiveness of projects and implemented cost reductions, using up-time, cost, productivity, and other appropriate measures
  • Is a leader and Subject Matter Expert (SME) in process control/discipline, SPC, SQC, OEE, Designed Experiments, and other Performance Excellence processes (Green and Black-belt skills)
  • Designs and/or specifies new equipment or modifies existing equipment to continuously improve process performance.
  • Coordinates installation, debugging and initial operation of new equipment and systems.

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Supervise and validate critical extrusion parameters (temperature, pressure, speed, cooling profile).
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues related to material behavior (PVC, PE, PP) during processing.
  • Technical documentation of processes and operating conditions.
  • Train and develop technical and operational teams in extrusion best practices.
  • Lead continuous improvement projects focused on efficiency, quality, and cost reduction.
  • Sustained improvement of OEE in extrusion lines.
  • Support production teams in process stabilization and scrap reduction.
  • Root cause analysis procedures (5 Whys, Ishikawa).

Experiences/Education - Desired

Education. 

  • Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electronic, Chemical Engineering or related. 

Work Experience

  • 5 year experience in manufacturing engineering
