Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of Position:

  • Tier I process support for manufacturing micro optic products
  • Tier II contributor with New Product Introduction; Design for Manufacturability
  • Support Technology and Divisional Engineering on new product development/process changes

Major Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure product integrity by assuring processes established by Technology, Divisional Engineering, and/or Plant Engineering are being followed in manufacturing.   Participate in process design reviews and engineering changes.  Utilize plant systems to communicate to manufacturing in a timely manner.  Ensure product bills of material and routings are consistent with the master design documents.  Assist manufacturing personnel with any issues pertaining to the manufacturing process
    • Align, design and construct work stations to manufacture products – micron tolerance
    • Laser-based alignment measurements
    • Metrology, characterization of optical flats, wedges, prisms, WDM filters. Some experience with light sources, power meters, test systems, etc
    • Operation of deposition chambers is a plus
    • Epoxy application and diagnostics of manufacturing equipment
    • Lead or participate in projects for cost reduction, process improvements to address quality and yield issues, and/or reduce production cycle times
    • Support process improvement qualification plans.  Provide data for technical reports for internal publication
  • Participate in new product development projects as the Plant Engineering representative, focusing on “Design for Manufacturability”.  Use Stage Gate and DMAIC processes as appropriate.
  • Ensure quality issues caused by process issues or product performance are addressed through improvement projects, design changes or Root Cause Analysis.  Product Quality Architecture should be updated as necessary.
  • Identify gaps in manufacturing capabilities and make recommendations to improve.  Support improvements using programs such as TPM and LEAN.
  • Lead several MEE investigations and execute project with success
  • Lead Product Quality Architecture processes and implement controls based on findings
  • Promote the establishment and maintenance of a safe work environment.

  • Identify equipment, material and processes using engineering laws, concepts and fundamental understanding and optimize the manufacturing process
    • To protect product integrity using systems and controls.  Understand the product’s attributes and how they are affected by the process or processes

Personnel Directed

  • As an engineer, will provide direction to technicians, equipment and test engineers.  Also will lead teams of people including peers across multiple locations and/or product lines
  • May direct activities for one or more technicians or process engineers

Minimum Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Physics or Engineering Degree (Mechanical or Electrical Engineering)
  • Masters Degree in Micro Optics field
  • Strong project management skills
  • Good problems solving and analytical capabilities (particularly statistical analysis)
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and influencing skills
  • High initiative, able to work with a minimum supervision or direction, and able to work in team environment
  • Bilingual: English/Spanish

  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in research and development, technology, and/or manufacturing engineering experience
