Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
The Sheet Metal Fabrication Engineering Supervisor provides day-to-day technical engineering support to the fabrication manufacturing shop floor to ensure metal fabrication processes are operating optimally and to meeting customer requirements also lead a group of process engineers and technicians focused on continues improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and/or direct engineering resources in the development and improvement of processes and equipment.
- Provides leadership in problem solving, and technical expertise, to ensure timely resolution of short-term process and equipment issues, and higher-level troubleshooting.
- Ensure effective process and equipment change control management.
- Create and update manufacturing procedures making sure they are in line to maximize process efficiency (shop floor layout, workflow, and assembly methods).
- Provide engineering support to the shop floor for troubleshooting and resolving product and process related problems.
- Define and implement manufacturing cost reduction and product improvement projects as part of a continuous improvement methodology.
- Evaluate and coordinate manufacturing process improvements (product design, materials, fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment capabilities, assembly methods, quality control).
- Support indirect the review of New Product Introduction engineering documentation (prints, process instructions) to ensure they comply with the agreed guidelines for manufacturability, quality, cost, operating specifications, customer, and company standard requirements.
- Determine needed equipment and tools to achieve manufacturing goals according to product specifications and requirements.
- Evaluate and coordinate purchase of new equipment based on operation requirements.
- Provide guideline to technicians and trainers in the interpretation of drawings and fabrication requirements.
- Provide daily follow up to manufacturing problems and initiate RCA for them to address key area metrics.
- Design and coordinate build of fixtures required for the process.
- Collaborate with training and production departments to develop, coordinate, and implement technical training for employees.
- Estimate production times, personnel requirements, and related costs to provide information to drive management decisions.
- Support the identification of training needs for supporting technical personnel.
- Be a role model for safety within their area of responsibility.
- Meets all Environmental, Safety and Health requirements.
- Supervise process engineers and technicians.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Mechatronic, Mechanical, Electronics engineering degree or equivalent combination of engineering degree
- Minimum 5 years of sheet metal operation
- Extensive experience in project management, sheet metal and cnc programming applications.
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Ability to identify potential process problems caused by engineering drawings/specifications errors and implement effective alternatives to fix it.
- Proven experience leading high impact DMAIC methodology projects with proven cost savings. Green belt certified.
- Proficient in mechanical design software such as SolidWorks, Pro-Engineer, CREO Parametric, etc.
- Proven experience applying lean manufacturing tools. Certification or classes.
- Demonstrates creative thinking when applying methodic analytical skills for problem solving.
- Ability to coordinate groups to design fixtures and tools with mistake proofing approach.
- Ability to effectively communicate with different organizational levels.
- Ability to independently work on complex problems with no guidance and make innovative recommendations.
- Basic understanding of the complete fabrication process (punching / bending / paint)
- Strong interpersonal skills (verbal/ non-verbal, negotiation, presentation). Proven experience leading a group of technicians.
- Must be process knowledgeable (know what is required to make a process work.)
- English skills – Excellent verbal and written skills communication, fluent English
