Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Controls Engineer


Responsible for the maintenance, development and analysis of several automated controls related equipment and software, such as PLC’s, Motion controllers and components, Vision systems and SCADA equipment and software packages.



  • Develop, design and program PLC, Motion, vision and other controls related equipment from the ground up
  • Read and diagnose currently designed PLC, Motion, Vision and other controls related equipment in order to identify errors and / or waste and implement new modifications based upon detailed analysis and positive experimentation
  • Design and develop complete automated systems utilizing engineering principles, advanced controls systems and electronic equipment in order to obtain world class manufacturing
  • Perform tests that are unique to specific applications
  • Work collaboratively with controls engineers located in distant installations to evaluate, analyze and improve current automated systems
  • Configure and improve SCADA systems in order to capture accurate process data
  • Propose potential automated equipment improvement opportunities using CAD tools
  • Ensure all relevant safety objectives and legal requirements are observed for all work completed
  • Interpret customer requirements, identify and address design parameters and engineering problems and ensure solutions are implemented accurately and within budget
  • Analyze data and present findings in written reports
  • Work collaboratively with design engineers, equipment engineers and manufacturing engineers to provide the best solutions using closed-loop control systems
  • Work with customers, suppliers, contractors and internal resources on projects
  • Able to manage projects within specific cost and time constrained environments while accurately gauging resources and equipment needed
  • Understand and ensure all equipment is in compliance with safety regulations and quality standards
  • Provide advice and consultancy support
  • Be able to specify and purchase equipment
  • Able to write computer software and test procedures
  • Develop new business proposals


Primary Objectives:

  • Work collaboratively with local and remote, design, process, manufacturing and controls engineers in order to design, develop, maintain and improve automated equipment transferred from local vendors and internal automated design specialists
  • Work independently and collaboratively to design and develop automated solutions for manual process
  • Leading projects to reduce waste, improve outputs or design new concepts
  • Collect and analyze data in order to track process capabilities of inputs, outputs and other system variables
  • Able to develop hypothesis with data analyzed and create experiments to gain fundamental understanding
  • Create, implement and proctor technical trainings
  • Create technical documentations such as logical swim lanes, process procedures and maintenance documents



Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge and experience with automated equipment
  • Knowledge and experience in PLC’s
    • 5+ years’ experience with OMRON based PLC systems
      • Knowledge and experience of CX One suite is a plus
    • 5+ years’ experience with any other brand of PLC systems
  • Knowledge and experience with Vision systems
  • Knowledge and experience in Motion controllers and components
    • 5+ years’ experience with Parker motion
    • 5+ years’ experience with any other brand of motion control systems
  • Knowledge with AutoCAD 3d rendering
    • Creo parametric or Pro E is a plus
  • Must be able and willing to travel
  • Must have general knowledge and experience with the following systems
    • Advanced process control (APC)
    • Distributed control systems (DCS)
    • Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to calculate Project plans and WBS work streams
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize lean tools to analyze processes and improve manufacturing environments


Education and experience:

  • Fluent in English and Spanish
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or similar related degree)
  • Minimum of 5 years related job experience with automated equipment
  • Minimum of 5 years related job experience with MS Office, CX One Suite, Allen Bradley RSLogix 5000, Indusoft, AutoCAD Electrical or similar applications
  • Knowledge of control and electrical system design and its application in automated
  • Industrial designs including specification of vision, power, sensor, inspection and communications systems
  • 5 years’ experience and / or a recognized certification in 6 sigma (green or black belt)
  • 5 years’ experience in at least one structured programming language


Physical demands:

  • Must be able to sit and monitor a computer screen for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time
  • The job requires the individual to be able to perform simple bodily movements such as, lifting, squatting, bending, and managing tight spaces


Workplace environment:

  • The main workplace is on the manufacturing floor in a manufacturing environment that require quick decisions to be made and a constant observation for safety and quality
  • The primary portion of the work will done indoors in a climate controlled environment; but there are times it is required to work outside for small durations of time
