Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

This group develops and integrates the Measurement and Inspection systems that enable Global Manufacturing to characterize and verify compliance of products manufactured and sold to our customers.

The Measurements Engineer needs strong technical curiosity across many technologies, and the ability to learn and desire to work with others for the progress of the business. As part of a global team, this position provides measurement solutions to Corning’s Optical Connectivity business to deliver best in class products to our customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with experienced professionals across a variety of functional groups (manufacturing, division, etc.) to define, develop and implement measurement methods, inspection systems and establish timing requirements and expectations for measurement requests and communicating any/all notifications to the affected parties.
  • Integrate process controls and error-proofing into the measurement process and assure the procedure is followed as documented by operations.
  • Provide global expert-level support to manufacturing engineering and operations teams to ensure efficient and reliable manufacturing operations for current or new products, advice on equipment troubleshooting and repair, identify root cause and implement corrective actions.
  • Train engineering, maintenance and operation associates on use and maintenance of measurement systems.
  • Develop and apply measurement uncertainty / measurement system analysis techniques to ensure proper measurement system application and capability.
  • Design experiments and analyze data to identify and implement measurement integrity and efficiency improvements to measurement systems for fiber optical assemblies, prototype and volume manufacturing.
  • Transfer measurement technology from other location/region or in early-stage development to a system ready for use in a manufacturing environment.
  • Develop and manage documentation in support of measurement system deployments including machine specifications, operating procedures, and drawing packages.
  • Leverage external suppliers with key technologies or systems integration expertise to develop, procure, build, and install test equipment for capacity expansion needs.
  • Lead or participate in projects for cost reduction, process improvements to address measurement cycle time reduction, measurement uncertainty (improving quality and yield issues) or equipment cost/availability.
  • Develop maintenance procedures for the test equipment, facilitate and document the procedure to assure the process is being followed globally.
  • Management of execution of short term and long-term solutions.

Experiences/Education - Required

  • BS in Optical Science / Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanics or Mechatronics.
  • 5+ years of work experience in measurement engineering, process engineering, visual inspection automation or related area.
  • MS in Optics Sciences or similar would be considered as a substitute for years of experience.
  • Strong English and Spanish written and verbal communication skills.
  • Background in fiber optics, optics or optical engineering
  • Work effectively in technical project teams in both leadership and team member roles

Experience in process or manufacturing engineering role:

  • Demonstrated application of the scientific method, Lean methodologies, and DMAIC tools.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, able to independently define hypothesis and problem statements
  • Knowledge in FMEA, PFMEA or Causal tree analysis applications and use of SPC, comparative methods and design of experiments tools.
  • Good understanding of statistical analysis (histograms, regression analysis, Hypothesis Testing, DOE, standard deviation, DOE etc.).
  • Understanding of principles for Measurement Uncertainty Analysis, Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (GR&R), and/or Measurement System Analysis (MSA).
  • Experience with project management, able to manage multiple projects and tasks in parallel.
  • Hands-on experience with optical test equipment (Light source, power meter, OTDR, interferometer, etc.)
  • Experience using CAD software for generation of mechanical assemblies and drawings, optical and electrical schematics, and general design layouts.
  • Participate in solutions related to process issues and Customer Notifications.
  • General computer and networking knowledge.

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • Scientific curiosity and an inventive spirit.
  • Optical metrology, preferably in fiber optics.
  • Demonstrated application of measurement science in the fields of fiber optics, surface profiling interferometry, microscopy, optical refractometry and/or other optical or physical measurement disciplines.
  • Working and demonstrated applied knowledge of fiber optic cable assembly measurement equipment related but not limited to: optical attenuation, reflectometry, surface profile interferometry, and video microscopy (end-face inspection).
  • Understanding of computer-based measurement or automation equipment, design, setup, support, and data systems architecture.
  • Experience in development of automated solutions to improve process controls (Including PLC programming).
  • Experience with optical fabrication processes and optical testing.
